Default CRC Checks - 01-03-2011, 05:15 PM

I was wondering how many people check the CRC on anime downloads before watching them?

If you don't know what CRC is it's the letters and numbers you find at the end of file name e.g [Ayako]_To_Aru_Majutsu_no_Index_II_-_12_[H264_1280x720][E80F8860].mkv highlighted in red here which tells you if the file is corrupt or not

If you download the file via a torrent program, then there's no point as it auto checks the file anyway. If you download via a DDL site with a browser, particularly from a known flaky provider (i.e. MediaFire), then it may be worth it to check the file.

Generally though, I doubt most people will bother unless they're particularly obsessive about the integrity of files and/or you're archiving a show to DVD/BD so they want it to be perfect.

Even if a video file isn't perfect, at worst you won't be able to open it at all or it'll play part way and stop. 99% of the time you'll just see a few frames of pixelation and then it'll carry on as normal.

tl;dr Nobody really cares.

well thats my position. The problem with crc checks is they can show that the file is corrupt, when its perfectly playable. and I'm not a fanatic who insists on everything being perfect.

I'll probably check it if the file that I downloaded has something wrong with it then I'll double-check whether it's my problem or the video problem.
Besides that I don't think I would check it.

Only crc check if it's not in anidb. If it matches then I add to anidb, if it doesn't then I find somewhere else to download it. End of story.

I check CRCs most of the time (like 85%). I've downloaded more than my fair share of corrupted/edited/wrong eps from DDL sites. CRC helps me make sure I have the correct file I'm looking for. Lol, I remember downloading an entire series that someone posted (not sure if it was here or not) only to find out half of it was mislabeled and was a completely different anime. I was watching it and was like WTF is this? So yeah, I check CRCs.

@master_tonberry; That what gave me the Idea when I was checking the Gundam 00 movie I thought well who dose this and who knows whats it is.

I personally only use CRC then I download a movie/ova thats over 1gb files size and 720P or higher

@kellypibb; I have had that happen to me

checking the CRC is also a must for groups who refuse to tag their release/s with v2, v3 etc.
