Default I need help buying a new earphone/headset - 12-01-2010, 04:57 PM

I made a new thread just to get recommandation on getting a new earphone/headset. As some of you know (few I guess), I'm in Japan right now and when I was looking for a new earphone and headset there are TONNES that I don't know what to choose from...

I don't have any specific taste in earphone and headset but, if possible I want to get something that is good/sylish/unique with good bass sound.

And also, I will be using:
- Earphone for mp3 player
- Headset for computer and mp3 (Computer mainly)
For the price, I can handle up to 15000yen (including both), that's around $178USD and 136 Euro

So, can you guys recommand me any good earphone and headset that I can buy?? or can you guys tell me tips or ways that I can buy good earphone and headset.

MOREOEVER, please don't say to buy from internet; I know I can easily buy off from net but since I came to Japan I might as well just buy a good one here than going back and buying from net... don't you guys agree??

Thanks a lot guys ^^ really appreciate your help

Try the KOSS brand if they have it in Japan. If they don't, any SONY/Bose brand would work.

Don't know if they have these in Japan, but I have an earlier model and really like them.

The thing is, about casual recommendations, everyone is only familiar with one or two or three versions of the product in question. They will tell you that the one they liked the best is good. And the one they liked the least is bad. It is a crap shoot.

Instead, go to your favorite search engine and type in "headphones review comparison" and read a couple where they compare 8 or 10 headsets to each other. This process should not take more than an hour or so, and it will yield better results than random testimonials.

Dude just head to head-fi.org. They've reviewed thousands of headphones and could easily give you a reccomendation for a good set. There are quite a few good starter sets if you're looking for quality headphones. Sennheiser HD280's are DJ-style closed phones and they have great bass which some of the lower-end Sennheisers lack.

A lot of people reccommend the Audio Technica (AHT AD700s) for their soundstage but they have a lack of bass. If you can find them on sale, the Beyer Dynamics DT770 or even the 880s have a similar soundstage with all the bass you could want. I'm currently using the DT770pro 80's as they're easier to drive paired with an Astro Mixamp than the higher-end 120+ohm headphones . If you want an excellent headset with audiophile quality without the need of a beefy amp then the Sennheiser PC350's should fit your needs. They're basically the hd595 driver in a closed-back cup with one of the best headset mics in their category. If you don't want to spring for a pair of $150 headset then the creative aurvana live has awsome reviews. They're the same as the Denon AH1000's with a slightly different cup and a headset. I demoed these in Fry's once and they blew me away.

Hell, the AKG 701's (Mio's cans) have gained in popularity ever since K-ON came out and they're still a respectable pair of headphones. However, with alot of these headphones you'll need an amp to drive them as most have an impedence rating of 80 ohms or more. That's why the AHT-AD700's are recomended as you can buy a pair for ~85 and still have money or a portable amp. If you're going to be doing a lot of gaming then the general consensus is the Astro Mixamp paired with a lot of the higher-end headphones above will give you that "surround" feeling. Hell, even as a pass-through amp it's still has respectable sound.

tl;dr
Just do your research and find a shop that sells these headphones and demo them for yourselves, you'll be the best judge on what you like.
tl;dr;ps

The man above is right, head-fi is a good source of reviews and opinions.

Generally speaking, anything over 100 is going to need to be amped with an mp3 player, so just go for some nice looking IEMs, I'd recommend sennheiser but feel free to shop around for what you think might be best. For headphones, I'm planning on getting a pair of ATH-AD700s, they're open backed so not a lot of bass, but if it's just for general all-around listening that should be fine. If you listen to a certain kind of music mainly, there are different headphones that make that kind of music sound better.

Just for the love of God, don't get skull candies.

Tnx for the ideas guys it really helped me in learning about different headset/earphone

However, I have to ask do I need desktop amps/any amps when I buy a pair of headset?? It confuses me whether I should buy one or not....
For example, do I need amps for headphones that you guys recommanded??: such as Audio Technica ATH AD700s, AKG K701s, Dynamics DT770 etc...

Edit: Okay, I changed my mind: I'm gonna get either AD700s or K701s... looks alright to me (comparing design, Impedance, frquency, sensitivity etc...)
With that being said, is there any tips/things that I need to know when buying either of these headphones?? and also what amp do I need for these headphones??

Tnx again

I'm a big fan of the Bose earphone and headset brand. The earphones were on par with the Sennheiser (headset) brand I had. They have the best quality and base of any earphones I've tryed. The only draw back is the prise tag. At $100 their pricey but worth every penny, and if your not hard on your stuff then they'll last for a while. Mine just broke this year and I've had them for at least 4 or 5 years. Then again I'm not sure how long a regular set is suppose to last. I was a little rough on mine.
The Bose QC 2's are an on-ear head phone that retail for about $100 something.
The QC 1's are around-ear headphone that retail for $125.
All prices from Best Buy.
