It is so inconvenient to be forced to update your games (unless you are in offline mode) to get rid of latest bugs or add extra functionality. I just want to play my games bugs and all... and then bitch that they are never updated or are buggy.
Sorry I can't continue any further... your logic ... or lack there of... is appalling.
If I have misread and what you actually meant was that the steam client itself needs updating... then I am left even more puzzled. You question whether companies are ready to explore new technologies, yet you yourself are against letting them patch their software to prevent or fix bugs/exploits or flaws.
You did not misread, I do also dislike having to update that piece of bloatware too.
In my opinion not every game needs patched to work, sure if I wanted to play the the game online I would want the latest version, but to play a game offline I'd like to forgo the trouble of wasting what precious little bandwidth I have, and be able to play it within a reasonable timeline of using the executable.

I would at least like to have the option of refusing patches that I do not feel are necessary, for games that,
A: Have no online mode.
B: I do not plan to play online.
C: I don't complain about bugs, they are nothing more than the over or under sight of programmers expectations, due to hardware, software, or that where not found or discovered by game testers, due to lack of creativity.
D: Functionality... meh, Slight improvements are not that important, if it is a game breaking bug, then finding a patch is as simple and fast as starting a browser, assuming patch exists.
What I am against is being forced too, I am also against games that require constant internet connection and I refuse to purchase those games, Ubisoft used to be a good company Battle Realms now that is a good RTS. Steam happens to be on border in my opinion on this as it also has a 'offline' mode, though I generally try to avoid purchasing steam products unless the game is on my must play list, portal, half-life.
Some patches break games or operating systems. This concludes My opinions you are free to disagree with it. "In Trust, Is Treason." Corrected words.
