Default First or Third person gameplay - 11-10-2011, 07:03 AM

Of these 2 game's view, I prefer 3rd person more than 1st person because:
1. In shooter games, you are in risk of getting shot from the sides during 1st person mode more than 3 person because the field of vision is not wide enough.
2. They claim 1st person shooter is the simulation of real shooting but if let me tell you, thats a lie. In real shooting, you can bend your body to shoot from around the rubble, stick your gun through a hole in the rubble and you can tell where your body is when you are covering, able to tell if the rubble is enough to hide. Can you do all that in first person? NO. You need to play in 3rd person to tell if you can hide in that place, most 3rd person shooter allows you to stick on wall and shoot. Of course you still cannot stick your gun through a hole. But in this arguement, 3rd person gets 2/3 while 1st person gets none
3. A more personal matter, if I move too much on 1st person shooter, I get dizzy
4. You can move faster in 3rd person 'coz you are aware of your surrounding

1. To conform to how much field of vision you get in real life; mainstream FPS actually requires a REDUCTION in FoV. Realism is good in that it promotes immersion(gears of war: oh my, the character I control just got chainsawed and blood is everywhere...oh well. Amnesia: Holy ****, f**k, that f**king monster is coming at me!!! DO NOT LOOK AT ITS EYES!!!). You only have that problem on inferior console games because joystick does not do as precise movement as mouse for looking around.
2. "They" can claim all that want, mainstream shooters suck in term of realism anyway. Besides, how are you going to control your "stick gun through hole" movement??? Since you cannot do that in 3rd person shooter anyway, you cannot argue anything for 3rd person. Also, IRL you do not simply stick gun out of any small hole; you need to be able to AIM out of the hole(unobstructed sights AND barrel) which you will never know unless you look down the sights, in first person.
3. If you get dizzy in fps...how do you move in real life? I personally believe people who get dizzy playing fps are people who never move around much IRL.
4. You move at the same speed in either 1st or 3rd person game; it is just that you actually check around corners with eyes rather than simply rotating the camera. It promotes carefully clearing the area instead of charging into every room/around every corner thinking it was okay because you see your surroundings.

This is why games like ARMA2 actually feature a 3rd person perspective so you can get the information you need from the "feel" in real life(such as whether this RPG's HEAT round is sticking out of the building or not).

In shooting games, racings and sword wielding ones, first person view is a must. This is for people to experience that they are the one who is playing the game. But on Rpgs, Adventure games, Action games and Fighting games, third person view is most recommended. Imagine playing DMC in fpv, just plainly no.

Both have their quirks. But if you really wanted to lean on realism, I think FPV does a better job at it since you can't look at corners without sticking your head out (not like in TPV)

It really depends on your preference or opinion. Moreover, both of them serve difference purpose in the gameplay so you really can't compare them and decide which one is better... Its like saying, your trying to compare FPS games with RPG games. They are both games but their content is different.
