Default 3DS $80 price drop... plus 20 free games - 07-31-2011, 05:01 PM

Half a year after the 3ds is launched it's getting a massive $80 price cut down to $170. That's great news for everyone that's still considering on buying it or were just waiting for the price to go down.

But what about the people (such as myself) that bought one at the full $250? That's kind of a kick to the balls. Nintendo, already figuring there would be a backlash from current owners, will start a program on September 1st for 20 free classic NES and GBA games for any current 3ds owner.

The only requirement is that you log into the eStore at least once before August 12, which is the date of the price drop. Anyone that has done that will automatically be registered and eligible to dl the free games starting September 1.

Only half the games have been announced so far:

WTH.... my niece just got one for the bday last month. We would've preferred the price drop to those games since we probably have them already. And it's probably too old for the kids to like.

Actually, production cost of the unit itself is around $130, and a large portion of the profit went towards advertisement.

In any case, you can still go to Best Buy and buy it with the price reduction guarantee, and get your money back when it price cuts while still getting the 20 free games.

Something like that doesn't hold much weight when Sony is bringing out the PSVITA (which is technologically superior in pretty much every aspect hardware wise) out at $250 for the wi-fi model.

The reason is simple with Nintendo, they were on cloud nine with how successful the DS was and thought that they could run with that price with the next version of their hardware without taking into account the market is different than how it was 5 years ago with the rise of smartphones and tablet devices. It also didn't help that it didn't have any good games until OoT 3D.
