Default The Black Jewels Trilogy - 11-21-2009, 10:39 PM

If you want to take a break from anime and manga to read some actual books try The Black Jewel Trilogy by Anne Bishop. Consists of three books: Daughter of the Blood, Heir to the Shadow, and Queen of the Darkness. I will warn you though, while they're considered fantasy novels they're very dark and contain strong overtures of sexual and sadistic material. It's nothing too extravagant, at least by my standards, but the villians act like villians and one of the main characters defines the anti-hero archetype. It's also worth mentioning that the setting is based on a matriarchal society, but one that keeps in tune with the dark tone of the novels.

Decent enough series and the anti-hero Lord DIABLO is actually a rip off of numerous anti hero's and villians from numerous fantasy series. The best dark fantasy series out there has to be the A SONG OF FIRE AND ICE series by George R.R Martin but he sure takes time to release a new book!

A Song of Ice and Fire is awesome indeed, possibly the best historic fantasy series. You're right about him taking his time though. Don't think he'll finish it in less than ten years, which kind of sucks.

That reminds me of the fact that I need some new books to read.

Can't really decide on what to pick.

Anyone has a proposal? Don't care if it's epic or historic fantasy.

A series with a rational and intelligent person as one of the main characters would be a nice change.
Are there any fantasy books which provide such a character?

Actually there are 3 books after those and the 4th is released in march 2010
I really liked the magic system, that's probably what kept drawing me back.
Also there's a [Only registered and activated users can see links. ] thread too so now you know there are a lot of avid readers on AT

Have you read the Bartimaeus Trilogy by Jonathan Stroud?
If not I'd highly recommend it!
