Today Sony in partnership with Tohoku University announced they have developed a new laser technology that will allow them to encode discs with twenty five times the data of any standard Blu-ray disc, with a total capacity of 1TB on a single disc.
OMG 1TB on a single disc... thats crazy! Imagine how big PS4 games will be... just WoW O_O

I thought 50gb was big enough...

why am i not surprised. 1TB used to be huge about a year ago, now we got 1TB portables that can fit in ur pocket. Simply put, when companies decide to focus on a goal, they can do some amazing shit. Now if only we'd start focusing on space travel......

lets be realistic here. humans are developing more and more technology, thus being more dependant on the earth's resources. However, there is a limit to these resources on this planet alone. For example, oil. Currently it's the most used source of fuel available to us and the only one for space travel. Yet we're about to run out of it, and currently electricity isnt gonna get us back up there anytime soon. Now oil may not be available out in space considering where it comes from, however there are other resources in space we could use. I'm just saying, we could have had people living on the moon by now if we really focused on it. Shoot, maybe even on mars.

I'm amazed its taken them this long. Sony began working on bluray shortly after DVDs first hit the market.

1tb on a disc would be amazing... except that a game would cost $500. Plus who's going to make a game on a 1tb format? Production cost for games that don't even fill out a 50gb disc is already so expensive. It's why so many developers release their games on multi-platform.

By deleting the middle, the irony really stands out.

Guess What This Is?

Hint: picture was taken in 1956...

It's a hard disk drive back in 1956... with 5 MB of storage. In September 1956 IBM launched the 305 RAMAC, the first 'SUPER' computer with a hard disk drive (HDD). The HDD weighed over a ton and stored a 'whopping' 5 MB of data.
Do you appreciate your 8 GB memory stick a little more now?

Not really, since that's from 54 years ago. It just makes me sad for the people that lived during that time period.
