"In a voluminous response to an investor question about moving to support high-definition output, Nintendo executives laid out their current thoughts on how and when to make such a move in their consoles. Of course, these thoughts shouldn't be taken as a definite indicator of Nintendo's plans, but they might suggest where the company could be headed in the next generation. And if these statements do reflect future events, Nintendo's next console will be HD-capable, but won't require that standard for every game.

Genyo Takeda, GM of Nintendo's Integrated Research & Development Division, said that "moving to HD appears to me a natural flow" given the adoption of HD by television programming. "If we can find out the most appropriate medium, between SD and HD, and flexibly move around them depending on the game's contents, it will be good, I think," he suggested. Shigeru Miyamoto agreed, noting that HD wasn't the most important consideration for something like Wii Fit. "Won't HD be better for the games like Pikmin? The developers should choose the most appropriate graphical format depending on the software they make."

Basically Nintendo is getting worried cuz no one is buying from them and are considering making an HD console but not all games would be made in HD.

The current generation of consoles has atleast another 4 maybe 5 years left. By that point HD tv and Bluray will have completely taken over the market. For Nintendo to not release an HD system for their next console would be suicide.

^ I agree with Conduit... In a few years time more people will have an HDTV in their home and the entry point for a person to buy an HDTV is alot cheaper than it use to be.

Nintendo should make all their games HD standard in their next gen console. HD may not be necessary for some games but I really want to see Mario in HD *¬*

One way I see it as, I didn't spend a lot of money on a really nice TV to NOT play games in HD on it. One of the reasons I refuse to own a Wii. Considering there are only a handful of games I would want to play on the system it doesn't make sense to me to own one.

Not to mention that Nintendo has been cycling the same crap for the last 20 years. Really? The princess gets kidnapped? Didn't see that coming... >.>

Well they do it because it became their signature character and series, it also sells extremely well. Sega did the same thing with Sonic. (and still does it)

Honestly I question how accurate that information is without a definite source. Though I do see them eventually moving to HD, I don't see it as "due to low sales". On the contrary, the Wii sales have been very good. Beyond being bought by just gamers, people who wanted a "social" console got it to play with groups. Family's got it to play among themselves, ect. This led to people calling the wii a "kiddie" console or not to great, when in fact it is a great console in it's own right (Just like how the others are) If I remember right it is still the top console sold worldwide for the current generation, so I would hardly call that poor sales.
