Default How NOT to button mash?? (Arcade Stick) - 06-26-2011, 03:28 PM

I need some help from pros out here who uses arcade sticks for fighting games.

So, I got this arcade stick (Hori I think) from my friend a week ago when I told him that I bought a copy of BlazBlue CS. He said its more fun than using actual controller (we're talking about PS3 here), and your able to input moves more precisely and clearly with it...so yeah, I started using the stick instead of PS3 controller.

However, the thing is that whenever I try to do some move or combos, I end up button mashing and as a result, get my ass kicked because I wasn't able to input the moves correctly thus, screwing up my combos.

It seems that whenever I play with someone, whether its CPU or real person, I get nervous and starts button mashing.
Well, I guess that's for being a noob in fighting games and not able to use the arcade stick correctly.

Anyway after I played several times with the arcade stick, I got used to the grip where I stick my middle and ring finger in between the shaft. Also, I configured my buttons to my preference where I actually feel comfortable with. So I guess grips and buttons are not the problem here...

Therefore, I need some help or tips on how to NOT button mash. Like, how to input commands without screwing up and flawlessly execute combos etc...

ALSO, do you learn like 2 or 3 combos up by heart and use them only?? because it seems that I'm having troubling learning combos and I can barely able to use 1 or 2 successfully in the real game so yeah... kind of frustrating... or does it come from practice??

Thanks guys.

A lot of timing.
I play BlazBlue CS as well (On my 360) and I have a Street Fighter 4 Tournament Edition Arcade stick.
I mashed for a while too, but when you learn combos you end up finding out how much each command does, and how long it goes on in frames/seconds.
I play Jin, so timing is pretty needed.
Just keep practicing at it and learn timing! That's the most important.

Play turn-based strategy games.

"There were 3 sisters, and, a man might ride for days and never set eyes upon such maidens. Marie, tall and grave, and Blanche, petite and gay, and the dark Agnes, eyes that went through you like a waxed arrow. I stayed there as long as four days, and was betrothed to them all; for it seemed shame to set one above her sisters, and might make ill blood in the family. Yet, for all my care, things were not merry in the house, and I thought it well to come away."

I've never played BlazBlue(haven't really been into fighters since the SF2 days) but if it has a practice mode, I'd suggest using that for working on combo timing if you're getting nervous during regular play.

What's wrong with mashing buttons? It works well in Marvel vs Capcom why wouldn't it here. Hell I've mashed buttons to beat my friend in SF4 who plays a lot. You're random attacks will screw with the them.

Just learn to time your mashes xD

Lol, very true. Marvel vs. Capcom 1 and 2 is a button masher paradise. That's why I enjoy the game so much, I never know what I'm going to do next. I play with a X-arcade tank stick. I've never played the game you're talking about but I play alot of fighting games. Sometimes, like in Dead or Alive 4 where you had ungodly combinations of buttons to do a move, I found it more easy to just memorize two combos. I would memorize a close and far ranged attack and go from there.

Maybe that will help you some. I would also suggest maybe just constantly using your arcade stick for some of your other games too. You'll get used to using it for more than fighting games quickly and grow more comfortable with it. The only games I don't like to use my tank stick on are shooters. Especially the COD series.

Play Arukune. Then spamming isn't considered spamming

MvC series is based off spamming. The Guilty Gear and Blazblue series isn't. Combo strings in BB/GG can go on forever; especially for corner combos. You are considered at least an amateur player if you can do BnB (Bread and Butter) combos.

Most characters on BB have 2~4 main combos, which are called BnB combos, as I stated above. You'll find almost every BnB combo on Dustloop.com. As for being able to pull them off correctly, just spend an hour or so practicing one combo out at a time in Training mode until you get down the timing. Then go through an arcade to put it to practice against moving bots, then finally try it out online.
