Default Question - Story Opening - 06-06-2010, 11:06 AM

TL;DR : How do you like stories to start?

(Not sure if this is Okay for a new thread, or should be in SSOTM diss. Plz move if you see it should be).

I was curious as to how people prefer [shorter] stories to begin? Or just what type of begging to a story do you enjoy? Though I know it heavily depends on the type of story I'm still curious.

Do you prefer a story that jumps right in? Straight to what's happening?A sudden/drastic opener?
Or a slow build into the storyline? (Savor the flavor?)

Or do you prefer for an introduction of that stories "world" and it's characters so you can get all of that out of the way and move on. Or is that just too slow and takes up too much time for you on a short read?

Or skip the intro stuff, and just go into the story at a normal pace.

If it is this last one do you prefer:
A - If stuff seems fairly obvious there's no reason for an in-depth explanation, so skip it and save time for the readers, they can more than likely figure it out them selves.
or
B - Explain bit by bit as the story goes as it seems necessary.

Thank you for your feedback!

i think i would prefer stories that jump right into the action. has to be quick and provoke alot of questions.
i don't read much but at least in animes this was good. (im thinking Gai Rei Zero ^^)

A sudden/drastic opener. Something like Code Geass and Shakugan no Shana or Zero no Tsukaima. I get bored by a slow build into the storyline.

I support this. I prefer long stories as there's more to read and other stuffs. =x

Beginings must be "powerful" and "promising", so you get all "tied up" and don't dare to drop it, even if at some point it may start to look dull...

All the world's a hentai, ^___^
and all the men and women merely yaoi-fans...

Either right into the action like others have said, or another good one is a mysterious opening where the reader isn't so sure what is going on but knows something is.

What if a story was to suddenly open with body parts and blood flying everywhere in the heat of a battle? People being disoriented and confused, scrambling to fight back and by the time they surround the enemy, the person reflects on how he knew today would be a bad day on how his morning started? Then to go into detail and explain the "World" and characters, to suddenly jump back into the heat of the battle as he finishes, and continue on with the story from where it left off.

Would this be a satisfying intro? Or "just no"?

Question: Is one person talking about his daily morning boring as while he's doing that explaining everything to the reader? Er, should I go about explaining the "back story" (World/Characters) a different way? Or is this acceptable even though we've seen it a few times in anime's .

The first part would be a good way to start, since there's an element of suspense. x3
You would need to give it a cliffhanger ending, then jump into the past. Examples would be, 'Then the enemy jumps in front of mi and pointed his gun in my face...' Then do a flash back. :3

Question's Answer : What other ways are there to explain it? o.o

I think that it should start in a place that is exciting but later on the whole story should slowly be described
