Default New Words - 02-18-2010, 10:39 AM

I'm probably the only person here who does this, but I keep a text file of new words I come across while reading books, manga, or just while browsing the internet. I used to include definitions but frankly it's a pain to copy/paste from an online dictionary into word (stupid tables are a mess) so look them up yourself if you don't know the meaning. Here's my list so far:

Profligate
Pedagogy
Lugubrious
Esoteric
Acrimony
Epitome
Suppository

I used to do that cause my mom encouraged it when I was much younger.
Had to show her my list of new words whenever I finished a book
Seem to have fallen out of the habit lately though.

Well, while reading, i try to remember them by using them more often, and thanks to the internet, we can learn new words faster..
another way to learn new word is just randomly typing into google and see what happens..

That is such a great habit to get into. I used to hate doing it in school, but without it, my vocabulary wouldn't be nearly as big as it is now.

And another fun way to learn new words is to type something bland like blast into an online thesaurus and see what other words could describe it. It's a must if you are ever writing a story. No one wants to read "And the gun blasted a shot that blasted over the lands at speeds that a giant blast couldn't match."

I prefer to actually just look up words I don't understand. Some have a tendency to simply "skip" the word and you still get the overall understanding anyway. At least most of the time for my case :<
