Ever try writing a 500 word short story in 30 minutes? It's harder than it sounds. I had to write one for an application to the school I'm trying to get into. Give it a shot, see what you can come up with. My criteria was that it had to be about a mask.



My name is Marcus Sullivan. I write for the New York Times… well I used to anyways. Lately I haven’t been able to write much at all. I just can’t seem to formulate words on paper, and when I can its only to write in this damn journal. They say everyone’s got a story to tell, and I guess I’m no different. You can decide whether or not mine is true for yourself, I don’t care much what you think anyways.

My block started about a year ago when I came across a story about some scam artist selling trinkets that he claimed belonged to the old gods. Now this bastard was telling people these things would give them the power of the gods, and what’s even crazier is that he might have been right....
I started my research on what seemed to be your typical spring morning. It was warm enough outside to feel comfortable, but the fucking air was filled with a thick layer of moisture. Enough of it to make you feel like you just stepped out of the shower and you can’t seem to get dry. I suppose that played a part in what happened that day.

I found my way to what appeared to be an old rundown apartment. When I say rundown, I mean the whole deal. Tables and chairs overturned, bits and pieces of furniture scattered about. Every so often you’d spot a rat in the corner of your eye scurrying to some unforeseen area of the apartment. I suppose it all played into this guy’s image, at least that’s what I thought at the time.

The place seemed to be empty, unless this guy got a kick out of sneaking up on guests. I made my way to the centre of the room and picked up what looked to be some sort of mask. As I lifted the mask into the air I began to feel nauseated. Truth be told it was probably the moisture and humidity combined with the scent of rotting wood causing my stomach to unsettle.
I heard a voice in the back of my head, “I am the voice of Woden. You have taken what belongs to me, and as punishment I shall take from you what you value most.”

Now believe it or not, I woke up in my apartment later that evening. I had a massive headache and my dry throat informing me that I’d recently thrown up. I made my way to the bathroom and noticed a note on the mirror. It read:
Dear Mr. Sullivan.

The punishment for your crime has been decided; however, I am not without mercy. Come back to my apartment exactly one year from this day with my mask, and all shall be forgiven.

And so I leave this journal here in this old rundown apartment, for you. And as I said, you decide if it’s real or not. I’ve got something I have to pick up.

Reminded me of the essay section of SAT lol. Good times...
Always tried to write some more after the time is over.
