Default Does anyone know the right structure to write a novel? - 11-13-2010, 11:18 AM

Hi there...

I'm already writing a long story, trying to make it as a light novel, but I'm not sure if the way I'm writing it is correct...

How many pages, how many chapters per book, what size for the book, how to divide the talking between characters, the protagonist inner thoughts and the third person story-telling?

Tell me your thoughts about my questions, please.

Step 1: Take paper.
Step 2: Burn paper.
Step 3: Stab yourself in the face with pencil or pen.
Step 4: If still alive, go do something more productive, like step 3.

There are three rules for writing a successful novel:

#1. Be good with werdz
#2. Don't reveal all your secrets

#4. Profit!
fix'd

EDIT: because I feel a little guilty for posting absolutly useless things twice, I'll try and give what suggestions I can.

Chapters per book and pages per chapter isn't really too important, just make sure that each chapter finishes at a place thats suitable. You can get away with having 5 long chapters or 15 short ones. What matters is for each chapter to be a complete chapter.

as for what size for the book I have no idea. Hell Ito be honest I don't have any idea about any of the rest, why don't you go to baka-tsuki and look at some of the light novels there for an idea.

WOW...
Well, besides the nice idea of trying to ask for some help from Baka-Tsuki, where can I find online some easy-to-learn tutorial to write light novels?

I just don't want my entire work to go to waste...
Is just that I've already written hundreds of pages of story already in my PC and didn't want to restart it all from scratch...

You yourself should know when the story reaches a stop point. The stop point is a point where it feel like it reaches the ending for a while, like the end of the day for example. There is no need to care about how many pages there is or how thick the book should be. If the chapter is lacking, then add in more materials.
