Genre
Action-adventure, comedy,drama
Setting
The story takes place in edo period japan, though it is far from historically accurate as it has western influences throughout the show including rap music and baseball.
Characters
Mugen - Grew up in a tough area where only the strong survive, this is reflected in his personality as he has no manners, not afraid to speak his mind, and quick to anger. He is a swordsman with a very unorthodox style relying solely on unpredictable movements and quick reaction times to win against his opponents.
Jin- Unlike Mugen, jin is very quiet and reserved. he is a ronin who uses the kenjutsu style. He is a master class swordsman, as you will see if you choose to watch this anime. His most distinctive feature is his glasses which was not common during that time period in Japan.
Fuu- A petite young girl 15 years of age with, I don't know how else to say this, bad luck. She has the appetite of someone who has never had food before and has a companion by the name of MOMO which I believe is a sugar glider(flying squirrel) who hides on her person most of the time.
Plot
The three meet by a chance encounter in a restaurant where Fuu is working, after an accident at the restaurant Fuu decides to embark on a quest shes has been putting off to search for the samurai who smells of sunflowers. She hires Jin and Mugen to be her bodyguards on her journey.
Review
I'll start with the art style, the animation isn't the prettiest I've seen but it seems to fit well with this particular anime. Most of it is fairly well detailed but you will notice in battles with many enemies you will see just shadows being sliced in half, not uncommon really so it shouldn't bother anyone. Soundtrack wise I don't really pay much attention to songs in my anime, I can tell you that there is one opening and ending soundtrack. The opening is a rap song in English called "battle cry" which is fairly catchy and I enjoyed it. The ending called "shiki no uta" its in japanese and is ok, not my type of song. The anime had three soundtrack released in japan. One was released in north America that had mostly tracks from the original soundtrack.
The characters are very interesting, you understand them and yet your not sure how they will react to different situations which keeps you immersed in the show. If you love action then there is plenty of it as Mugen and even Jin are quick to draw their swords. The fights are going to leave you wanting more, especially against the tougher opponents, but just like in real life the fights are short but sweet. They seem to spend most of their time looking for money to pay for food and lodging which is usually what gets them into trouble. One thing I love about this anime is it is serious when it needs to be but there is plenty of comedy. It seems the past catches up with the characters at some point on their journey which lets you learn more about their past, and how they got to where they are. The show only ran 26 episodes but after those 26 you'll want more. This is one of my favorite animes, I've watched it maybe 4 or 5 times if you haven't seen it yet you need to put it on the top of your list.
