General Synopsis:
You've probably heard of this show at least once; more than likely, you head about its ending. Neon Genesis Evangelion could be most easily described as a giant robot anime. However, if anyone actually tried to boil the anime down to something as simple as that, anyone who has watched it would look at that person like they had grown a second head. So instead, I'll say it's a giant robot within psychological and theological ideas hiding behind that premise. The anime is light for the first half and then shows it's psychological and depressing side during the second half.
Basic Plot:
The anime is centered around Ikari Shinji, who was abandoned by his father at a young age. He is then called to pilot an Evangelion for the organization called Nerv, since he is one of the "few" who can do so. The anime then becomes about the all the characters completely shattered worlds and the fight to not allow the Angels, the "antagonists" of the story, to initiate third impact.
Setting:
The anime takes place in the year 2015 in Tokyo 3 of Japan. In the year 2000, Second Impact occurred and wiped out half of the human race and turned the Earth's axis. Second Impact is caused by a meteor that crashed into Antarctica, melting the ice there and resulting in rising sea levels as well. The effect on Japan is the loss of coastal cities and being in a state of perpetual Summer.
Characters:
This is perhaps the most interesting part of the entire show, as everything in it is about their struggles within this world and how they react to it.
Ikari Shinji: The protagonist of the story who you'll either like or hate. He's meek, wants to run away, and is estranged from his father. He doesn't know how to deal with people and is the pilot of Unit-01. He always comes through when needed most and is perhaps the best Evangelion pilot.
Ayanami Rei: If you liked Nagato Yuki, or any other character who is an enigma that doesn't talk much and seems to be completely distant from the world, you will love her. Rei, for most of the anime, shows little emotion, and what emotion she does show is only towards Shinji or his father. She is the pilot of Unit-00.
Sōryū Asuka Langley: Brash and prideful, Asuka is the pilot of Unit-02. She is the "best" Evangelion pilot according to herself and also has the "best" Evangelion of the three. She takes pleasure in antagonizing Shinji and perhaps hates him for his piloting abilities, but not wanting to pilot.
Ikari Gendō: Shinji's father and the stoic Commander of Nerv. He does not care about most of the characters and treats them all as pawns to complete the objective Nerv was created to do: destroy the Angels and protect mankind. The only characters he's gets along with are Fuyutsuki Kōzō and Ayanami Rei. He prioritizes the safety of the Evangelions above the pilots.
Katsuragi Misato: The Operations Director of Nerv and the person who takes care of Shinji and Asuka at her apartment. She is a slob and drunk when not on the job, but once there, is more serious than any other person. She prioritizes the safety of the pilots before anything else in combat against the Angels. She creates daring and bold plans for fighting the angels.
Overall Rating: 9/10
If you don't mind dated graphics, this anime is a must for any fan. The music is very good and accompanies the show perfectly. The characters and the story drive this anime and make it as good as it is, despite the original ending. To get everything that is going on you'll possibly have to watch it a second time and watch End of Evangelion, but that's for another review.
