I really hold a grudge against the Israeli anime community. Sometimes it feels like they only care about animation and moe, and less about plot, direction and quality. This connects to this topic directly - for the above reason, the majority of the community hates almost every anime made before the early 2000s.
I think it's obvious by now, but I'm a major fan of the 1990s. Some of the more influential anime was done in those years - the kind that redefined how anime looks nowadays (Neon Genesis Evangelion, Trigun, Slayers). If you go even earlier, to the 80s and 70s, we have the very forefathers of anime - Gundam, Macross, Mazinger. Shows that have remakes and spinoffs even today - 30 years later. And they're being overlooked for the most trivial reasons ever. In my eyes, this is nothing short of blasphemy.
Regardless of the above rant, I really like the 90s. Evangelion and Slayers are in my eyes amongst the best anime I've seen. Slayers has amazing plot and comedy, Evangelion has depth, psychological exploration and a kind of sick atmosphere I find really cool, and really - I haven't seen a 1990s fantasy I didn't like.
I agree evangelion's great, but shinji's character is meh...
I don't totally agree that 90s are the best. I can only remember few titles that are great, such as gundam wing, cowboy bebop, and not to mention most of them are scifi/action. I think nowadays they focus more on the characters and a lot of variety. Now we get series with unique plots like Death Note and Haruhi. We also get nice slice of life pool, which is a great way of deviating from the norms like onepieces, bleach, and naruto.
