I'm fairly curious on this.

In anime, the cold is notoriously represented as something that needs intensive care and immediate bedrest. Don't even think about going outside your room, let alone school.

Here in my world though (America), people with colds (including myself) just tank it and show up for classes or work... unless its something really serious. pack up like 20 tissues in your pocket to blow your nose, make obnoxious sniffing noises, etc... man it out.

Am I misunderstanding their definition of a cold? or Does anime exclusively exaggerate the cold for the sake of setting up situations? or Are Japanese really that overly-concerned about the dreaded sniffles?

just a bit ignorant of the facts here and would like to know...

Yeah, I was thinking the same thing. Right now I'm sick and well It's not like I have time to lay in bed, so just like you said, I pack 20 tissues in my pocket and leave to work. But in the animes, if you have a cold you have to stay in bed and eat warm things and such and then the next day they just feel better. I mean that's amazing to me. I get cured in about two weeks. Man, I wanna go to Japan.

Well I'm not saying that its impossible I'm saying that its amazing. And now that I think about, If you treat a cold instantly, then hell yeah you'll get cured instantly.

I think its more that they show people with colds ignoring it, and getting worse because of it, at which point they need the excessive care.while this does have some basis in fact (if you're ill and you keep on exhausting yourself, you'll certainly get worse) its got to the point where is become a goddamn cliche, and colds are rarely shown in anime, except for a character to collapse with an inconvienient, but not life threatening disease.

people with colds wear those surgical masks in the city, because japan is so crowded. colds would spread like wildfire in the subway or the busy streets of tokyo, and you probably know already that japanese show alot of respect for one another, as apposed to america where we don't give a shit if people near us get sick or not.

some Japanese are being courteous when they have a cold and wear the mask so they don't breathe their germs on you and infect you too"

i dont want to start flame here but sometimes i wonder why Americans(1. not saying all of them 2.claiming they are the greatest country) don't know how to handle this kind of little situation, they think a little cold or flu is something not to be worry about, but they need for more than a week to get better

they wore a face mask because they don't want to spread the bacteria to others

sometimes living in a SO-Called Great nations needs to learn from some not so great nation...

and not only that a small flu can easly kill u f ur not so imune there were many cases in the past were ppl died bc of a smalll flu but this day's most of the ppl are imune so don't woory so much even if they get a cold they wont die but if they arent a small litle cold can spret in ur body more than normal and can make a pneumonia ands u can DIE. So i think its beter to be precacious like in the animes and i think they are so precatios bc they wont get sick so often so theyr a bit scared
