Should I bother watching Macross Frontier if I've only seen the first series?

I've watched the first series only (and I am currently working on Macross Plus) and I found it very intriguing and well done for its time. Anyway, I'm looking for more entries into the series that are worth watching. I couldn't bear 7 so I had to stop watching, but I heard Frontier was excellent. Think I can make it with such a limited knowledge of the series?

Yep. In fact, 7 has barely any connection with frontier. The only important one to watch is SDF. And you should watch plus since it's by far the best macross out there.

Plus the OVA , though the Movie has a few extended scenes

Don't forget about macross zero... its a prequel to the whole macross series and explains humans first contact with the protoculture... there's also an episode extremely related to zero so it'll be more enjoyable if you watch it first. It's only like four or five episodes and quite recent so looks just as good as MF.

after the original macross, most of the stories branch off. So its nice to follow the series through the timeline but its not required to have an understanding of whats going on. the nice thing about frontier is that early on, it sets the story straight, so long as you at least know how it all started.

If not for the beautiful animation, do it for the soundtrack. seriously can a series have a better soundtrack than macross frontier?
