Yeah... I'd second that... You should watch Macross Zero before watching Frontier as there are a lot of references to Zero that you won't get if you haven't watched. The references to M7 you'll get as long as you know who Fire Bomber is so you don't need to watch that. There are also some references to Macross Plus, but they only involve knowing about certain models of Valkyries so not neccessary, but I found it nice to know ahead of time.

there's nothing important carried over from other series that isn't explained in Frontier. However there are a lot of background references and in-jokes from every Macross series (from the classic 'trapped in the belly of the ship' scene to the use of Isamu's hand flying sign) so the more you've watched before, the more you'll get.

I would recommend watching Zero first just because it makes one episode of Frontier more interesting by being able to compare the two

A definate must watch anime, also it may be just me but the macross series of anime have the most memorable songs out there like "Do you remember Love?"
