Erhh.. If I remember correctly it goes like this:
Evangelion 1.0 You are (not) alone Evangelion 2.0 You can (not) advance Rebuild of Evangelion 3.0 Rebuild of Evangelion Final The first movie is an alternative retelling of the tv series, but I believe there's more movies, some are spin-offs and such. And there's even a movie depicting an alternative ending as well. It's very easy to get lost and I could be mistaken <.< |

an easier way to understand the series (original one) would be to watch the movie death and rebirth and then end of evangelion movie the new movies are a retelling and a alternate storyline so it would be more benefical to watch the original first

Yup, do what Ghost said. Watch the Death and Rebirth movie, then End of Evangelion. The new movies in the Rebuild of Evangelion is a four part retelling of the original series, but really only the first one is available right now, and it'll be a long time before all four are done.
But just watching the Death and Rebirth movie won't really be that good. Usually not the greatest things happen when condensing a 26 episode series (especially one as complex as NGE) into an hour and a half movie. My suggestion is to forget about the movies for now and watch the original series. Yes, it's a little older, having came out in the 1995, but the animation still holds up today overall... it's a Gainax production after all (FLCL and TTGL). Imo, which is shared with a lot of the anime community, is that NGE is one of the greatest series ever. Don't dismiss it just because of the year it came out. |

As it been mentions, Rebuild Eva isn't complete yet, so there's not much point watching that yet.
Watch the original anime, it may be old but the quality of it is still amazing. Now after you went WTF from watching last 2 episode, watch End of Evangelion movie, which gives the series a nice ending instead of WHAT?? you get at the end of last 2 episodes, which probably ended like this because they really run out of money. |
