It's a terrible character archetype that has been well liked for a while now. Rei from NGE comes to mind as another example of the type.

On topic: I think watching it in the non-sequential order is more interesting than the linear type with this kind of show.

Yeah but Rei atleast had a personality, and was far more attractive. So her popularity is atleast somewhat understandable.
