Default What do you like and hate in animes? - 12-18-2009, 11:39 PM

Seems some people have thing for ecchi type animes and just wondering what makes you want to watch animes?

I like animes that seem rather cute, innocent and slice of life type of animes without showing ecchiness all the time. I like Azumanga Daioh, Genshiken Yotsuba, School Rumble and Rozen Maiden, you know how it goes now.

And I'm the type that usually likes to avoid mecha animes at all cost as well as ones that seems to suggest fanservice like Chobits and Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya.

However I loved Elfen Lied despite all the gore and nudity. It was cute and story was emotional enough.

What are yours?

Like lolis and pettankos hate ridculously developed girls. (come on is she REALLY still in school?)

Like gar characters hate the bloody useless ones who are full of wangst and ****. (Not saying characters should be emotionless tough guys but lets not pull a shinji either)

Love animes that actualy get on with the damn show rather then using fillers and just dragging **** out forever.

Don't mind fanservice but if the focus shifts too much towards it that series is dropped.

Making stuff bounce on the spot is neither funny nor entertaining in "other ways", make it stop.

Why are there not more toy goats that go "mehhhhh" at random points in anime, one of the best ideas Gonzo has introduced but no-one uses them.

If an anime is an adaption of a VN, don't take the (often least intersting) main character route every time.

No plot armour please.

What I don't like:

Tentacles
Mechs
Ninjas that should have been killed while they were busy monologging their next attack.

What I do like:

Everything else.

Actually, there are a few mech type animes that I like so I guess that would be a moot point.

What I hate most in anime is the fact that there is always a precise distinction between good and evil. The hero is almost portrait as a perfect being immune to temptations while the villain is irredeemably evil and often for no reason at all, as if it is evil from the very day it was born. Coming to the real world, do we really see such distinction between good and evil, or do we more often see a shade of grey between the two? The recurring theme of a saintly hero and a evil villain is making anime somewhat boring to some extend... why must he protagonist always be right? Can't there be other ways of looking at things?

Also frustrating is the tendency of producers to use 'the power of god' deus ex machina to finish a story. Why must a immensely stronger antagonist always lose to a visibly weaker protagonist? This rarely ever happened in the real world. A real good example for this is FFVII Advent Children, Cloud, after his sword arm is clearly decapitated by the superior Sephiroth still manage to pull that final fancy move to defeat Sephiroth. How can one pull that move with a useless sword arm? I'll admit it's probably to please fans so that they will buy merchandise but if that's the only reason for them to make anime at all, then they might as well stop making any, it is tiring being able to guess the outcome before the finale.

Finally, please incorporate something for the audience to reflect about after the show, a glimmer of truth or a portrait of current social problems, instead of always glorifying baseless optimism. It is better to know the ugly truth and try to do something about it than putting one's faith in beautiful lies, imho.

As for the good thing about anime, I think it is more versatile than live-action movies. Actions, background details and complex designs can often be successfully shown to a higher level of realism in anime than in live-actions. There's no limitations of actors as well as being relatively cheaper to produce.

That's just my rant, please ignore it if it offend you.

Seriously, why do people tend to use the term "deus ex machina" so often lately. Furthermore what you gave as an example has nothing to do with a
"deus ex machina".
