It's because most mechs are about war, and in war there's death and sadness. Pretty much almost every decent Gundam anime is sad.

well the sadest anime i'v ever seen is code geass . I cried like five times during the second season and if i watch it again i'll cry again(tested it three times ) T_T

well i actually watched the 2 seasons in 2 days so it came like a shock to me and also the charactors personalities seemed so real.
