There is that thread about getting shy or not when telling someone you like anime, but I don't think we can see much when we're only fixated about our own side. What happened when you have told people?

Whenever I tell someone I like anime I've ranged the responses I've had:
*smile* -> "wahhh - let's talk about this over =there="
and
"..." -> *Looks away*.

In between those would be girls I've met who only liked Fruits Basket manga and asks if I liked it, guys who only liked licensed anime (only watches them off DVDs) and says it is wrong to download unlicensed shows, and one Naruto fan girl who annoyed me greatly (styled her hair like Sasuke from Naruto).

Today, some stranger who was making small talk asked me, "what are your hobbies?" I told them watching anime and reading manga. He said, "good luck getting a job".

WHAT DOES THAT MEAN?!?!!?!?! I've only thought of two possible ideas:

1. He seriously thinks because watching anime is my hobby that I want to make money off it somehow. - Incorrect; I am obviously studying to be something else.
2. He thinks employers would never hire some weirdo who likes things different than themselves.

This of course is different than the normal responses I listed, but after that experience I am going to continue my course of surrounding myself with people I know who aren't bigots (not saying he is a racist, but from what I saw he automatically looks down on people who share my interests). So continues having only Asian friends who share my interests or can respect them ;-;. I guess next time some westerner asks me what I like I should lie and say football and guns. Needless to say, I am Asian, but liking Anime isn't a race thing to begin with. I am just sick of the response I get from westerners (this person's and every other white person I met consisted of the "..." -> *looks away* response group.)

tl;dr - How can people discriminate so easily? I'm sure other people have better stories; I've never heard a response of "KAWAIII DESUuuuuuuuu", but I think I'd facepalm if I ever run into someone like that.

practical people find it a srs waste of time.. but hey, it helps keep my mind off drugs and such.. so screw them

quite a similar case in my life...only i dont hit ppl often...unless they provoke me or sth..
i would tell sth stupid he/she watches and tell him any anime even bullshit ones are better than that...mostly it is the case with ppl who like soap operas...in my case hindi soapies...*VOMITS*(EEEEEEEUUUUUUUUU.....bleeeeeeee hhhhhhhh)

some people liked it since they watched some anime themselves, some just dont care and others just find it childish, those are the ones that need to be punched

what I don't understand is how does it related with being gay just watchin PL?
