Default Your subtitle preferences... - 09-09-2009, 02:29 AM

Each fansub does something a bit different whether it is the font style/size or colors of the text, but when I compare fan subs with unlicensed shows to official subs on DVDs there are severely more differences.

DVDs - From most recent DVDs I've purchased, the subtitles have always been yellow or the generic white. White is good, but yellow just pierces my eyes and it feels a bit distracting, but maybe it is just me. Their positioning is normally slightly higher than fan subs (where fan subs normally have TEXT on the bottom, but a little gap between the bottom edge and the text - DVDs normally have a huge gap).

Official subs occassionally leave out -chan, -san, ect which bothers me because you lose the level of relationship they have for each other when it happens (so you read and listen specifically for the honorific).

This isn't fan subs vs DVD subs, but it is a lot easier to talk about the differences in that sense first.

What are your preferences in subtitles? Text all the way at the bottom instead of DVD - hover around the 20% area? Color, font? Do you want the honorifics in the subs or not? Do you like signs subtitled on the picture or off on a side of the screen (Place Promised DVD - if I remember correctly, they either have the subs over the Japanese text or they have it to the side of it instead of off the main view which blocks the art). Do you like when fan subs do "Translator's Note:" explaining something Westerners may not understand? Do you like when different people are talking at the same time for there to be different colors? I can go on. I'm certain that everyone enjoys accurate subs, so this isn't the place for that.

I like the ubs to be at the bottom of the screen, usually not too big but in plain white cuz I cant really see a point to colors. I really like the translators notes at the top of the screen when they appear so I can pause and read them. They really help me understand the dialogue...Im not really good at speaking or understanding Japanese so I am a little slow at readin the text. gg and Eclipse do a really good job for me....Chihiro is alright and DB does a great job for Bleach.

too big is ugly but too small hurts your eyes. only white with black outline please -___- any other color doesnt match at all with all the different colors of backgrounds. also no curly or cursive fonts... keep it clean and understandable.

translator's notes are good, but please don't use it to explain honorifics. i also like it when pictorified text is subbed.

another important thing is making an honest effort at keeping the original japanese meaning of words being said. i hate it when somethings are made super colloquial for english speakers. this is probably the hardest part to translate.

Big, but not too big, at the bottom, white with a colored outline. I always like when the color matches something about the character, like their hair color.

what is this i dont even

Doesn't matter really too much on the style or anything. I can always adjust the size and position if its in an mkv container as a subtitle file.

I like them to be readable from where I'm sitting, but not too big. I'd like them as small as possible being able to comfortably read them, and I guess style doesn't really matter very much as long as it's clear what it says.

i find the most annoying thing is when fansubbers use a strange font for their subs that just make it hard to read like what chihiro did with R+V
