This is in no way a thread bashing anime. I love anime (and manga) and it is now my only hobby I make time for.

Out of all the shows you've seen, what percent of them do you consider to be good? I personally only find my upper 20% to be good or enjoyable, very few bad (from what I fully complete), then the majority fall into the average abyss. Average shows generally make me angry because they don't feel bad, but you aren't specifically enjoying it. I usually don't drop those type of shows because I hope they can redeem themselves later in the show, but they normally disappoint me.

From my negative look on the anime community, I have a feeling that some people like anime because it is anime, so nearly 100% of the shows they've seen are good. From the few people I met in RL and many I met online, that is the impression I get instead of people liking quality anime. What is good is an opinion, but if people think a wide majority of anime is good; I am a little hesitant to hear what shows they actually find awful.

I won't have a poll because explanations would show why people think a certain slice of anime is good or not. I said 20% of shows I found enjoyable, but the majority is average because they didn't come to fruition despite waiting a full series.

Hmm, well. This is kind of hard for me to put into percentage as the only ones I remember were the ones that deserved it (i.e good ones). Anyway, if I were to just pull a random number out it'd be somewhere around 15%. Most of the other stuff seems to be unimaginative cliched garbage. But then again, this is just a random percentage.

Anyway, people who like or watch anime simply because it IS anime are pathetic weaboos. Watch it because it's good, not because it's from Japan.

I don't just watch any anime though, i can usually tell if i'll like it before i watch it.

The 10% of bad comes from watching stuff just to tell it's fans that it sucks. (go me)

id say i got a higher % than you but i definitely understand what you're saying.

a long time ago i spent a few days making my Plan to Watch list. I can assure you, if its on my PTW list, ive at least read 2 reviews and the synopsis of it and have deemed that it is at least average (or a sequel to something else). what i watch now (aside from new, ongoing series) is generally like 5% crap, 50% average (like that "meh" feeling you describe), 40% above average (actually enjoyable) and 5% excellent. rough estimations of course... but i almost always hold on to a series unless i really just cant stand it (part of that 5% crap category).

MAL shows my mean score is a 7.2, where i categorize average as 7... but about 1/3 of the list is before i researched my shows, so id say im fairly accurate.

**theres also times where im just looking for a rom-com or rom-drama and settle for a piece of shit (Suzuka, kanokon, gift ~ eternal rainbow, etc...).

This. I don't watch any anime, I try to select beforehand so I know what I'm in for. I do enjoy a higher percentage of shows than I should I guess, but I'm a pathetic optimist who tends to enjoy almost anything.

Usually, I'm easy going about what I watch so I would say 60% but asura cryin' and princess lover have taught me otherwise. Now the percentage has plunged to a mere 40% and is dropping. Think I just going to wait and watch the good stuff from now on.

Funny that you mention Asura Cryin' and even Princess Lover. Asura Cryin' was the first show I had to drop in the past few months when I decided to try to watch it this weekend, so "I could have another show to watch during fall 2009". I knew before I watched a lot of average shows, but that thing just threw so many cliches together that I realized I only wanted to watch it to watch more average shows instead of quality shows.

Dropped it after episode 4 on Saturday when I had plans to watch it during the weekend. I knew from that moment on, I'd take into account the general opinion on a show (I saw many posts that Asura Cryin' is bad-average) instead of just watching anything. I used to just look at the watcher averages (8.00+ I'd probably like).

As for Princess Lover - completely bad-average so far, but I think the fact that it is airing makes it more bearable since I'd generally watch things straight through (and I would never want to watch Princess Lover straight through...).

Only the past few weeks I've watched a lot of rather enjoyable things in a long time. Once I lost contact with some friends who recommended things I really loved, I had to fend for myself and sat through plenty of shows similar to what they recommended, but average ><. I guess with that my problem seems to be lack of thorough research. I've been known to only watch 1 really enjoyable airing show per season, then a bunch of average.

i dont go by percentages i go by how many people talk about the show.

If by good, you mean watchable, I'd say about 50%... maybe even more. If you mean things that you can enjoy, about 30%. It's about animes that you'll remember, those you can watch if you want in only one go, and leave you with a very good impresion, I'd say it's the 10% (3-5 per season). If it's about the animes that you just can't stop watching, those you love from start to end, and leave you wanting for more and more, then it's only a 1-3%. And finally, the perfect 10, the animes that define what is excelence, the kings of anime, those you will always compare to... then it's about 0.1%.
