Default Sub Groups - 07-26-2009, 12:47 PM

I've only been coming here for a short while, but I notice quite a number of different sub groups. A few questions...

What makes a good sub group? Who are the good sub groups? What determines which group's release gets linked at the anime download page?

Discuss.

In my opinion, a sub group's quality is determined by accurate subbing, efficiency, and enthusiasm.(listed in order of importance)

I've seen frequent cases when the subtitles are like piling the literal translation of individual words together, or simply translating the literal meaning without thinking what the context's trying to convey in the situation.

For example, when a person loses memory and says "...watashi, daredesho?", the phrase would normally be translated as "I wonder who I am" while during that particular plot what the character's trying to convey is "hold on, who am I?".

So in general, while being the most important factor of a sub group's quality, it's quite hard to sub accurately, lol.

Slow subbing can make leechers impatient, but the quality comes first so most of us won't mind waiting.

As for enthusiasm, it'll depend on individual sub groups. One obvious example would be Chihiro sub group; if you download their work directly from their homepage, you'll know what I mean.

I still remember the period link where it goes:

Quality X Speed. Perfect example = eclipse. Almost as good = gg. (i will probably get flamed by some gg fanboi's but idc)

In no particular order: gg, eclipse, frostii, anbu, Aone. These are some that most people will agree are good. Some others include coalguys, m33w, underwater, (lately stealing cr subs and putting them onto good encodes with typesetting) , db (yes they are good), and many more, which i cant think of from the top of my head at the moment. Speed. At animetake, the first release that comes out gets put onto the main page... So don't assume that anything animetake has will be uber quality, its often quite the opposite.
Animetake does often put better quality releases for some anime, but this doesn't always happen, and often depends on the anime, your luck, and the uploaders subjective views on the relative quality of different fansubs.

PS: Here are a couple of sites that will help you out on your quest to obtain the highest quality fansubs;
[Only registered and activated users can see links. ] , and [Only registered and activated users can see links. ] .
The former site is where individuals like you or me vote on releases by groups on each anime, and comments are also posted.. By reading the comments and looking at the ratings, you can most of the times find out which release is better. Note that ratings are more accurate most of the time, especially if there are many votes, as some comments can be biased(sometimes very blatantly) towards one group.

The later site doesn't really need much of an explanation, check it out yourself.

Anyway, thats the end of the essay, its 4am so there'll be mistakes and typos

Q: What makes a good sub group?

A: Not being a failure at finding quality video, applying to it quality translations that are properly timed, and doing it in a reasonable amount of time.

Who are the good sub groups?

Eclipse, Dattebayo (LOLAVI), gg, Ayako, m33w, BSS, Various-Other-Non-Failures.

What determines which group's release gets linked at the anime download page?

Speed. Whoever releases it first.

Edit: BTW: Coalguys = whiny bitches. QQMOAR PLOX. Otherwise, they're ok.

eclipse is the best, nuff said, gg is also good, though eclipse is still at the top for me^^ other trusted subbers are coalguys, inferno, underwater, m33w, chihiro, hatsuyuki, frosti, and yibis. datebayo subs are good but video quality sucks, shinsen is also good, though i haven't seen them for a while now, so is yuurisan, and tadashi.
a good fansub group has speed, quality, easy on the eyes font size, color and perfect timing^^ tired of talking, bye.............

*oh and btw, the best quality a good fan subber has is when they finish the whole series from start to finish!^^

KAA is awesome; they don't tend to release anime on-going but that doesn't make them any worst.

KAA often uses fansubs as their basis then cleans the subs up with official terminology and notes and re-encodes them to dvd releases. I don't know if they have their own translator though. I would assume they have their own just because on some of their releases they don't happen to acknowledge any fansubbers, though they could be using cleaned up official scripts.
