Lightbulb Are you satisfied with the writing quality in anime? - 07-12-2009, 04:19 PM

As a fellow whose done some study in the area of writing in the past I have to wonder about the current state of writing quality coming out of anime studios in Japan. But then, another part of me recognizes that sometimes you don't need an intricate and complicated plot, though it certainly never hurts. This becomes especially apparent to me when I watch anime with high quality writing, shows like "Mushi-shi", "Berserk" and "Cowboy Bebop" to name a few, each excelling in their own respective genres.

But for every "Mushi-shi" there's 5 "Lucky Stars", "Shakugan no Shanas" and "Ikki Tousens", shows with very weak writing but still have their place in pure spectacle or brainless fun. And there's nothing wrong with that, of course. But like I said, a great storyline has never hurt anything.

What do you think of the current state of writing in anime? Are you satisfied with it or do you find it lacking? Do you find plot holes to be terribly annoying (shows like "Code Geass" are full of plot holes) or do you just accept them and move on?

lucky star is gold! you can't say that lucky star is weak, it is a creative show that breaks traditional comedy! though you can call it brainless fun, but it ain't weak!^^

The writing is horrendously weak, if you can even call LS's storyline writing. The series is essentially a string of in-jokes for anime and video game fans and anytime it does try to write it fails miserably.

Take the episode where Konata's mom wanders around the house as a ghost. Very few jokes and seems to be a serious attempt by the studio to force some drama down your throat.

LS has some great funny moments but it's not because of good writing.

that is exactly the charm of lucky star, 1 episode is a compilation of many "skits" and those skits are whats creative and innovative^^

We're in a slice of life/Moe phase in anime, so naturally the storytelling isn't going to be strong.

Unfortunately, this is indeed the situation. Shows like Eden of the East are at least keeping me strung along with some semblance of hope. Shows like K-ON and Saki make me cry at night. I don't care if they exist, but the fact that they are taking up funds that could go into an interesting show fills me with sorrow. Hopefully, once Japan gets there heads around this whole "internet" thing, and starts bringing in money that way so they don't have to keep making cookie cutter moeblob shows, another golden age of anime can emerge. In all honesty though, at this point things look pretty bleak...

@Booyadude
saki maybe, but shows like k-on and lucky star are awesome shows for me, i know that eden of the east is a great show, but i wouldn't want all my shows to be like that, i also want some no brainer shows that i can relax on, guess to each their own^^

There are quite a few good stories this summer. Bakemonogatari, Tokyo Magnitude 8.0 and Canaan, all very original with great storylines IMO.
