That was a joke, not an attempt at web distribution. If the companies want to make money, they're going to have to take things seriously, e.g. not trying to sell your anime on a single platform which takes an investment of several hundred dollars just to access. Crunchyroll is another poor attempt, though it's closer than anything else.
I would be willing to pay at least $25 a month for a subscription based torrent tracker(saves bandidth on their end) or direct download service(better suited as a backup) with currently airing anime. They could provide a far better service than fansubs do, easily.
- Encoding directly from the master, instead of TVrips.
- Professional translators, instead of High School/College kids.
- Simulcasted releases, rather than the already quick two or three day releases of most groups.
I must admit, having something to hold does have its appeal, but the convenience and security of having a digital backup is also good. It would be just as possible for the western distributors to create dubs and release them digitally along their DVDs, so they can coexist, though I do wonder how large the dub-only market is.
