I think it's meaningless. The poll is asking what ppl think will be the most popular as the season goes on. So stricktly speaking it's only an opinion and not what is actually popular now or what will be in the near future.
That said there are series with a single episode being compared with multiple episodes. As well as first season series along side shows on their second or (in the case of Shakugan no Shana), even third season. One or two episodes may not seem like much but we are talking about the start of the season.
It's simple too early to have a meaningful poll based on something other then instant gratification.

It is interesting to see what's popular, or what gets the most buzz among the Japanese. So I respectfully disagree, digritz.
I note that all the ones in the top positions are revivals of old shows. This probably explains why sequels are so popular among Hollywood producers (and suggests that the Japanese viewers are similar to Americans in this respect). Although Shana and Fate are down the list. Not sure why - did they receive no advertising? Or are they done by teams that have failed in the past?
"There were 3 sisters, and, a man might ride for days and never set eyes upon such maidens. Marie, tall and grave, and Blanche, petite and gay, and the dark Agnes, eyes that went through you like a waxed arrow. I stayed there as long as four days, and was betrothed to them all; for it seemed shame to set one above her sisters, and might make ill blood in the family. Yet, for all my care, things were not merry in the house, and I thought it well to come away."
The teams that are doing Shana and Fate arn't really fail, so I would count that one out. And I believe them to be pretty popular. Again, polls are not from everyone, just a hand few people. not always the best accurate way.

Polls are *perfect* for getting tabulated answers to the poll question by the people who responded to the poll. If you try to use the results to give you the answer to questions that were not on the poll, then you deserve to be disappointed. (eg: using this poll to tell you what the best anime of the season is, would be stupid).
On the other hand - for instance - I notice that Chihayafuru was way at the top. This is one I decided not to watch (I can't watch everything). Now I think I will give it a two-episode trial and see if I like it. If it turns out I like it, then this poll would have been valuable to me.

I like ppl to disagree. That is what fosters meaningful dialoge. But it sounds like you agree more then disagree on how meaningful this poll is.
As an example of the meaningfulness of this poll here is another by BIGLOBE around the same time involing the same shows with, for the most part, vastly different results. [Only registered and activated users can see links. ]
The difference between these two polls?
GOO's poll: What anime will Be Popular.
BIGOLBE's poll: Anime with Highest Interest Level. Also it's listed as an official poll.
Pehaps I should have said the results are meaningless instead of the poll itself. Though I do not see much difference.
I am a bit curious to hear exactly what role if any these polls (this early in the season) play with regards to additional seasons and/or specials. The only use I can see is for advertising. Popularity would have a big impact on what show you want your product commercial on and how much you will pay for that slot.

NO NO! Don't look Dark!
It will only confuse you as much as the rest of us are.
Besides I just wanted to see how many times I could use the word meaningful in a post.
