Is this any good? It always sounded like a silly idea to combine stuff from 3 animes/mangas, make an American cartoon out of it, and call it Robotech.

"There were 3 sisters, and, a man might ride for days and never set eyes upon such maidens. Marie, tall and grave, and Blanche, petite and gay, and the dark Agnes, eyes that went through you like a waxed arrow. I stayed there as long as four days, and was betrothed to them all; for it seemed shame to set one above her sisters, and might make ill blood in the family. Yet, for all my care, things were not merry in the house, and I thought it well to come away."

Depends on your point of view.

By today's standards: It's not much.

For 19-frickin'-83 (1983) this was incredible.
An action cartoon where the good guys can die? There might not be a happy ending? The fights count? The Mecha's are well designed (The Warhammer/Tomahawk/Excalibur Mech is still my favorite til this day)? Character development? Minmei was actually a bimbo? Etc.

Trust us 'oldsters', it was just hard as heck to get anything good from Japan to the US back then. Too much risk monetarily (I mean, do you actually recognize Harmony Gold? Or any of the voice actors?). And to secure the blessings of Macross, Southern Cross and Mospeda -- all wrapped up into one juicy goodness was awesome.

But only for it's time.
(same way the original Star Wars just blew your mind....in 1977. By today's standards, not so much)

So if you try to watch it, try to under the understandings of the limitations of the day.
Or simply find the Japanese originals.

Note #1: Southern Cross and Mospeda have never had any successor series. Macross on the other hand has had plenty. One of those is Macross Plus. Now _that_ one is worth it. Sure it was made in 1994, and if you haven't watched the early Macross series some enjoyment is lost, but that Sonuvab**** does stand the test of time. Even the fight scenes. If you don't want to watch all 4 OAVs, there is a movie that cuts it down by half and changes a few details. (and for those of you ecchi bast*rds who are shouting 'BOOBIES!' right now......well, *sigh*, you are right)

Note #2: There was a video game that came out for the original Xbox for Robotech. It was cel-shaded and actually brought back most of the original Robotech seiyu cast to replay many of their original roles. For me, that rocked. (but remember what I warned about endings. These cartoons do not follow American rules)

Hope that helps.
At least you brought me down memory lane.

Oh yeah, for the original questions: Nope, there are only 85 for Rebotech. But there were some OAVs, and some confuse Robotech and Macross -- and Macross has multiple episodes across many successor series (like Plus, 7, Macross II, and the latest: Macross F)

It probably says 170 episodes because it counted Robotech's 85 episodes and the original Japanese ones which were 3 different, unrelated series; thus 85x2 =170.

Robotech has:

85 TV episodes,

1 "The Untold Story" movie which was only released on poor quality and little relevance to the series,

1 "The Sentinels" which was supposed to be the prelude to a new series but ultimately canceled (eventually published in novels) and the footage combined to make a special episode, and

1 "The Shadow Chronicles", a 2006 movie follow up to the original series

Is it worth watching today as a new fan? Probably just the 2006 movie, because even the remastered TV episodes look very dated by today's standards.

You can try reading the novels which I feel captured the TV series very nicely. I loved the books. They feel "light" and easy to read, and maybe because it's the first sci-fi novel collection I bought, had moments that made me laugh at the one-liners and situations.

There is a vast amount of hatred for Robotech but to millions of others, it was the first to introduce a "serious" outlook on anime, considering those that aired in my country before it consisted of Doraemon and the general silliness of the super robots like Mazinger Z and Grendizer.
