In all fairness, Final Fantasy: The Spirits Within was the only movie I ever got up and walked out of, so attitudes about animation may not be the only factor with that one especially. I never watched Beowulf, though, and everything else is certainly absolutely correct.
I was curious what your take on prime time cartoons was, and indeed once again you make a great point there. It's not at all uncommon to hear people deride others for watching anime, only to turn right around and watch something like Family Guy, and those are the type I usually picture whenever this issue comes up. The facts that it's foreign and the most visible elements of the fandom don't exactly project a good image probably doesn't help either.
Well yes, Final Fantasy: The Spirits Within was a bad movie, but that only further reinforces the idea that animation should be for kids in the minds of the people who went to see it, but ended up hating it.

I really kinda wish the anime industry went back to what they did from 2006 to 2008.....some really good shit came out during that time.
It's not like those days are long gone or anything, the industry is just looking for easy money in an even crappier economy than usual.
In an interesting development related to this topic: [Only registered and activated users can see links. ]. I've been hoping for something like this for a while now, just to see what would happen. Hollywood has its faults but also some stronger points, especially when it comes to dealing with the Western mass market, but they seem to be running pretty dry on ideas and just keep cranking out remakes of reboots of remakes. The Japanese have some really interesting concepts, but tend to weave intricate plots that would be fascinating if they went anywhere, which they seldom do, and obviously have some problems appealing to mainstream tastes, particularly in the West.
So what are the hopes and worries about something like this? I wonder whether they will heavily favor live-action, and whether they'll really be able to combine the strengths of each creative source or if we'll end up seeing the worst of both instead?
Actually its not complicated at all. The direction the Anime Industry is heading in is the same directions its always taken, the direction that makes money.

I agree! Well, maybe a little before that... what year did Fumoffu and Air Gear come out? LOL. But IMHO Anime definitely peaked around the time of Death Note.
I don't really even watch anime anymore... all I pretty much watch now is J-dramas. LOL.
