It's not really Conversion... -
06-03-2011, 07:02 AM
Hello there,
I once encountered the same problem a time back. I was recommended to All2Avi. But then we recently found out that it doesn't work on the newer encoded videos. I went forum hopping to figure out how to get it fixed, and googled the problem. Well, nothing really worked. My subs still wouldn't stay when I convert my MKVs into AVIs.
My purpose for covnerting is different from yours. See, I have a new TV that allows me to play videos off my USB sticks, and I was thinking, "Hey why the hell not?" so I tried, and figured that it only works on AVI. The the thing about these devices is that, the way the video is stretched according to screen resolution is different as compared to the computer. Thus I wanted To watch my favorite series on the Big screen in HQ. But lo and behold, all my videos were in MKV, thus started my hunt on tutorials for conversion.
Well, I got NOTHING. Nothing as in, ZERO results with regards to software and tutorials for Direct conversions. After all, almost all of them referred to All2avi which no longer works. So I searched for a different method.
The method I use now for conversion (if you can call it that) is not exactly easy, but it does give you a TONNE of options to choose HOW you want your result video. And you get the hang of it after a while, but it's time consuming, and CPU consuming, and depending on whether or not your computer is a beat down 5 generation passed on from years upon years, it MIGHT crash your computer. I got this method while asking around in m.3.3.w fansubs, and spent the entire day figuring out how to get it working.
A good 6 hours actually.
This method is not even conversion at all to be honest. It's actually re-ENCODING the Entire video. And it requires a Hell bunch of steps, I recommend not to try if you're not Tech Savvy. As it will require you to download at least 3 different programs, actually 5 programs. Two out of which will be installed as just plugins to run other programs.
The List of programs required: I will not post links, I kinda lost'em, just google the names, I think you can find them easy
Vobsub (This is a Plugin so to extract the filters you need)
MKVCleaver/MKVExtractGUI (Both NEED MKVtoolNix to run)
MKVtoolNix (This is NEEDED to run MKVCleaver)
VirtualDubMod (the main program that will do the encoding and conversion for you)
Aegisub (optional, it's mainly for EDITING subtitles)
An AUDIO converter (I prefer Panzera, but it's really up to you)
***Ahh yes, before I completely forget to mention it, I prefer MKVCleaver. I'll explain why, later.
The main idea of this is that, You completely extract individual files from the MKV file itself. Separating them, you will have your Audio, Video, and Subtitle files as individual files each. Then with all your plugins at work, Recombine them into a video file with VirtualDubMod.
However, VirtualDubMod, is just a simple basic program, there are a few file extention types that it can't read. Namely H264.
Alright, Why MKVCleaver over other programs like MKVExtractGUI. Answer is simple, MKVCleaver's new versions comes in-built with a H264 to AVI converter for your video file. It pretty much solves your VirtualDubMob being unable to read H264 file problem on the spot. So while you cleave your MKV file, it converts your H264 to AVI within the process. Convenient, No?
The result of your Cleaving result in 3-4 files, (it's up to you if you want the other optionals like your timecodes, cuesheets etc etc).
Video File [H264, AVI] *If you choose to convert in MKVCleaver, you'll get both. IF you choose to use a different program like MKVExtractGUI, you'll have to manually convert the video into AVI with another program*
Audio File [AC3, OGG, ADTS, ACC etc etc..] (these 4 are the most common)
Subtitle File [ASS] (most of the time at least)
One last option:
Attachments Folder [Inside this folder are the fonts used in the fansubs, if you want to retain the same font subbing quality, type and size, you'll have to extract this folder. And Place all the fonts into your Computer's 'Fonts Folder' as in, Control panel, Fonts. You know what I mean I hope]
The Audio converter is for, well converting your Audio file of course. You'll need to convert to MP3 or WAV. I prefer MP3, WAV makes your result file eff-in' Gianormous (yes it's a made up word, my friends and I use it).
Well, yes, it up to you if you want to go through with this. I'm just placing it up here so everyone who is anyone can take a look and decide if they want to try their hand at re-Ecoding their own uses.
It takes time, but the result is satisfying. At least, it's satisfying enough for me.
Btw, I pretty much joined the forums just so I can post this up. I don't go to forums often, so I'll subscribe to this thread if anyone has questions about this. Otherwise, you might not see me again. LOL.
Anyways, I hope this helps
