Hi everyone!
Lately I've been wondering why the anime downloads have been insanely big when compared to a few years ago. Last year, and sometimes even now, we find the anime files to be like around 300MB but commonly you can find them to be around 450-600 and now even 666.03 for last Dog Days episode. Is there a reason for this increase in size? I mean, obviously, the bigger the filesize, the easier it is to get good quality, but is there really that much of a difference between a 600MB to a 300MB 720p file? |

Unlike other groups who like putting constant quality and fuck the quality up at a few moments, D4rkFactor, the encoder, prefers to use variable quality and thus, the higher the quality the scenes require, the higher the filesize.
YES, there IS difference between quality as soon as variable quality (500~600 MBish) is used and COMPARED to constant quality (250~400). [20:37] <Ikaraus> so, I herd you're in Hiryuu (from WsE), that true? [20:37] <D4rkFactor> yea [20:37] <D4rkFactor> 'sup? [20:37] <Ikaraus> sup [20:37] <Ikaraus> just wanted to talk about the "completely unintentional" filesize of episode 9 of Wan-Wan bitches [20:37] <Ikaraus> XD [20:37] <D4rkFactor> XD [20:37] <Ikaraus> 666, eh? [20:38] <D4rkFactor> i know [20:38] <D4rkFactor> yep [20:38] <D4rkFactor> it was originally 658 [20:38] <Ikaraus> didn't you used variable quality? [20:38] <D4rkFactor> we just added another 8 MB [20:38] <D4rkFactor> for lols [20:38] <Ikaraus> hahahah [20:38] <Ikaraus> then, you switched to constant quality and did that? [20:38] <D4rkFactor> nope [20:38] <Ikaraus> ? [20:38] <D4rkFactor> i did it like i use to [20:38] <D4rkFactor> it became 658 [20:39] <D4rkFactor> then they decided they want to make 666 MB [20:39] <Ikaraus> how the fuck did you guys added the rest then [20:39] <D4rkFactor> i dunno [20:39] <Ikaraus> something in the container? [20:39] <D4rkFactor> null bytes? [20:39] <D4rkFactor> big font files? [20:39] <Ikaraus> lol, MKVExtract could prob find gay porn or something [20:39] <Ikaraus> hahahah [20:39] <D4rkFactor> XD [20:39] <D4rkFactor> check out the crc too [20:39] <D4rkFactor> DOGSFOOD [20:39] <D4rkFactor> even manipulated that |

most current anime shows air in HD quality over in Nippon. The raws that fansubs obtain/encode are usually straight tv rips of these airings, which are of large size accordingly... Not that half the fansubbing population can actually encode properly regardless. tl;dr reference on lolfilesize and quality relations here... |

Learned something new
I used to think that quality > quantity but after i filled my 1TB external hard drive i started replacing my stock with lower quality (mini mkv) and i can say that i don't miss much. Considering the 720p to mini mkv 720p the difference is not that big, some are the same~ |
