Default Akira goes live action! - 05-07-2011, 12:43 AM

Not sure how I feel about this. As we all know anime does not translate to live action well. I could see something like Ghost In The Shell but Akira?

My biggest issue will be the changes they will have to make in order to accommodate Keanu Reeves (although it's not certain he will play the role), as Kaneda. In the anime he was like 17, 18. Keanu is not going to pass as a teenager. Which means drastic rewrites from the original script. There is no way they will be able to please hard core anime fans with that kind of shit.

I could swear I made a thread about this, or possibly someone else, can't remember.

<----Too lazy to check

But I'm not looking forward to this, srsly, non asian characters playing asian characters...

Its like watching asians making a live action of X-Men or smth...

Why didn't he stick with Cowboy Bebop!? I actually think he could make a good Spike.

I agree with you man He has that lazy personality that spike has and if he fights like he does in the Matrix I think it'd work well.

having american actors act as japanese is like having americans or europeans speak japanese in anime.

God knows, IF this ever going to lift of the ground yet. These anime live action projects been floating around for YEARS now and nothing been happening. They keep talking about them once in a full moon but that's about it.

Got this from a website.

Quote:
The live-action film version of Akira has taken a big step towards finally becoming a reality.

Variety reports that Warner Bros. has now green-lit the long-in-development film to be produced by Leonardo DiCaprio and directed by Unknown's Jaume Collet-Serra.

The project has been budgeted down to roughly $90 million, with production slated to commence in either late February or early March 2012. No word yet on casting.

UPDATED: Variety now says "one of the first actors expected to receive an offer for one of the male leads is TRON: LEGACY star Garrett Hedlund. Hedlund has kept his head low since TRON's release, but sources have said he has been a top choice of the studio and director Jaume Collet-Serra."

Mmm, I'm still not sure how they possibly capture the feel of Akira with lack of the location and the lack of the music...you can't outdo Geinoh Yamashirogumi.. but hey if they taking Tron actor... take Daft Punk on board and I won't be disappointed.

But we'll probably get this:

I can guarantee that Daft Punk will not do the music for this.

Hollywood wanted Keanu as Spike when they were talking about Cowboy Bebop and now they want him for Akira? He's suppose to be in 47 Ronin and Man of Tai Chi. Do you think Hollywood thinks Keanu is part Asian? lol

I bet if they get him, they will simply rewrite it so that Kaneda use to be part of a gang or something, and is struggling with his low income job.
