Default Usefulness of the Anime in learning Japanese language and other impact - 03-12-2011, 10:40 AM

Hi ATF!

I saw recently on MAL some dudes who already watch more than 1000 anime titles. I watch anime especially not just for fun, but i can't too much increase in my knowledge after roughly 200-300 titles. May i change the strategy, or should i wait until i reach 5000 titles (lol)?
The another thing is the impact on the personality. I see guys, who watch really much anime became rough or brutish (you can say monster rather than obvious troll) or just more striking from outside, the original personality.

What are your experiences?

Thanks and sorry for my engrish!

Learning a new language is tough, especially if your main mode of language doesn't use characters like those found in Chinese and Japanese. Watching anime while you're learning Japanese will help you quite a fair bit actually. After a while, you will be able to recognise some of the speech or where do they use them. For writing, well, take it slow I guess especially when they reached the stage where you need to learn Kanji. It's a serious pain the butt =(

Anime is like my hobby so yeah, that's how it impacted my life. Things like drawing anime characters and listening to japanese music are usually the norm. Besides that, thanks to the anime Saki, I had to literally learn how to play mahjong to understand the show =/

As far as I know, watching anime is a pretty bad way to learn Japanese.

You'll pick up a few phrases or words that are common in anime, but go watch a non-anime Japanese show that isn't subtitled and you'll realise that you won't understand the vast majority of it.

From what I gather, the type of speech used in most anime isn't used in normal everyday conversations in Japan, at least outside of anime related circles. I read somewhere a while ago (this may or may not be true, I'm not positive) that even the term "baka", which is used in virtually every anime in existence, isn't used much or at all outside of anime/manga etc.

If you want to learn Japanese, go take an actual course or at least watch stuff that use a wide variety of Japanese words and phrases.

As for personality, I don't think people become "brutish" after watching anime, I don't really see the link even if all they watched were violent shows. That'd be similar to saying kids become murderers because they've played a shooting game or listen to rap music or something.

I try to look up words that sound interesting. I always try to pick out words I know, from the audio, and compare them to what the translator presents. I usually stop an anime 2 or 3 times per 24 minutes, in order to look things up in a jisho. More often than that and it isn't fun to watch the show, any more.

I have some lists of words that I try to keep memorized. This helps me recognize more and more, as each year goes by. However, Japanese sentence structure still doesn't make any sense to me. I will have to break down and take some actual classes before it really starts to make sense. I guess the real problem is that I don't know anybody who speaks Japanese.

And then there's kanji! Holy cripes that's a nuts way to learn to read!!!

A bit of advice about AT: If you ask for help, around here, you might get one helpful person for every 3 or 4 bullies looking for a good reason to show off or to criticize you for not knowing something. Try not to take it personally, is my best advice.

"There were 3 sisters, and, a man might ride for days and never set eyes upon such maidens. Marie, tall and grave, and Blanche, petite and gay, and the dark Agnes, eyes that went through you like a waxed arrow. I stayed there as long as four days, and was betrothed to them all; for it seemed shame to set one above her sisters, and might make ill blood in the family. Yet, for all my care, things were not merry in the house, and I thought it well to come away."

IMO anime helps you a lot if you want to learn Japanese. I've watched around 90 titles and gained a lot of skill in listening. Japanese is a subject in my college and I find it hilarious to watch people around me struggling with their Japanese test.
For the Kanji, I listen to Japanese music while using Minilyrics. It's a good way I think.

Impossible to learn japanese from just watching anime.

You may pick up words and phrases here and there but you won't get anywhere near a full understanding of the language.

i will most probably never learn that language .. even though watching tons of anime - even though visited a japanese course @ university < which made me resolved not to learn the language, it isnt even hard to learn still it takes time and practice

simple reason: aint worth my time
