After watching the first episode of Mahou Shoujo Madoka★Magica, I was feeling a little nostalgic and decided to go back and watch a few of the other Magical Girl anime I have saved up or on DVD.

Of the ones I have, I think the Magical Girl Lyrical Nanoha series are my favorite since it features the best magical system and most personable and appealing girl characters. Cardcaptor Sakura has the best overall plot, but the Mai Otome and My Hime anime have some serious angst, plot twists, and role reversals which make them close contenders. Magic Knight Rayearth deserves, at the very least, a special mention since it's one of the few mecha and magic anime I happen to like. I'm sure there are other magical girl anime I haven't seen or mentioned, but these are my personal favs. However, I absolutely LOATHE Sailor Moon.

I have to agree with Space here, Sailor Moon is the magical girl anime. Nanoha isn't bad, but its far being great, I think the majority of its popularity is based on the loli factor.

Have not watched Sailor Moon, well prolly because I started watching anime later. Have to agree on Nanoha being far from great though. I didnt quite like the very first episode so I dropped it till a friend convinced me to watch it last december and I watched 3 seasons at once. I prefer 2nd and 3rd season to the 1st one. Cardcaptor was pretty intriguing when we were younger due to the various card and stuff. Mai Hime was good as well but I feel Mai otome blew it.

For me, Nanoha is the better one among them and the story is still ongoing as of late. I prefer the grown up version than their loli ones though =/

Forgot about CC Sakura. That wasn't bad too, though I never got into the card-games.... Still, I really think we should just exclude Sailor Moon from discussion mainly because she is the magical girl. None has achieved the same level of longevity and awesomeness... That series is like the mother of all teenage magical girls.

Being a little older and having only seen the Sailor Moon ported over to the US and dubbed it was less than fantastic. Like watching power rangers, same plot, over and over and over and... well you get the picture. I did like nanoha and mai otome/hime.

One that was not mentioned and probably would not be considered a 'magical girl' anime is Negima. Although except for the main character that's basically all it is. Boy wizard searches for father and turns all his little students into magical girls by kissing them. My opinion anyway.

mai hime I can view as magical. Mai Otome is more futuristic since they get their powers from nano machines.

I havent watched card captor sakura yet, so i cant give an opinion about that one.

Slayers was kickass though. Loved Lina and her gun hoe attitude.

Nanoha, love that one as well. She kicks more ass than your sailor moon and her lil companions put together. First two seasons were a bit loli but later on you can't say she had the loli appeal going anymore. If they ever animate the 4th season, not the one with vivio, i suspect a much higher fanbase will appear.
