1-originality

2-Plot

3-Character : every character's personality should be good and balanced , I mean the villain can be too bad-ass it makes it fun but the Main character shouldn't be too perfect i.e. he should do mistakes and look bad at some times too the best example for this is Lelouch he didn't look like a perfect character at all , sometimes it even looked like he is worse then the villain . And dont even talk about death note , I still cant figure out who was the villain and who was the hero , that kind of thing makes it epic . even in FMA there were times Edward did mistakes though he never looked like a villain but he was not perfect he did mistake too.

3- voices : it should be good enough to bring out the personality of character like it was in the manga , I mean if you put in a serious voice seiyuu for a clumsy character it would destroy the personality character ( that's why English dub anime suck sometimes for ex Yui's voice in the English dub )

4 - Artwork : its important too anime like kare kano would have been a 1000 times better with a better artwork !!
5- all genre should fit together : I mean what kind of anime will be Action, psychological , suspense , mystery , supernatural + ecchi , though if ecchi is to a limit that it doesn't hinder with the story then its fine like there were a few ecchi scenes in code geass too but they didnt effect the story .
6- minimal fillers are part epic anime no matter what !!
7- music : like its said b4 u cant Imagine FMA or Code Geass without a full orchestra

8. Epic(epicly sad, awesome, cool, stupid...etc.) deaths... I do not care what genre it is. Lelouch? DIE! Makoto? Nice Boat! Reina? Baseball bat! Shiori(Kanon)? Cancer!(not really)

Shiki.
It might be extremely recent anime but it definitely goes on my list.

Story/Setting: Vampires invading a village. Not the most original thing ever, but I haven't seen many vampire stories before. Regardless of the unoriginality of setting, the details of the story and the way it progresses right to the blood soaked ending had me glued to the screen.

Art: Seemed average. Wish I had a higher resolution to view.

Characters: There are a LOT of named and recurring people in this. Got a bit confusing who was related to whom. But the main characters were unmistakeable. They behaved in a way I think is realistic. The Doctor was excellent. He was the lead and he never disappointed me in that role. Didn't do anything that didn't make sense and didn't seem to have gained magical help against death by the virtue of being the main character.

Music: A subdued tone that managed to capture the madness going on very well.
Complimented the violence and the emotional parts nicely.

OP/ED: The first OP and ED I found quite ordinary and boring. But the second ones were great. Particularly the second OP.

-----

I guess to me a masterpiece doesn't have to excel in all areas as long as it does some things very well and is not let down by the others.
