I had no idea this existed.
Thanks for the heads up.
Just watched it. Thoughts in spoiler:

Otonashi takes on Kanade's role as antagonist and sets in motion a new resistance to help dissatisfied people.
I really like this ending because in the original ending he realises himself right at the end that he had already had a fulfilled life and therefore had no reason to be there. He said himself that he wanted to stay and help people out.
The original ending scene never made sense to me because I couldn't see a path for him to take to die in the afterlife and resurrect into the real world.
Now I think that he stayed behind to help people and waited and waited until he met Kanade again in the afterlife (since I think that she's the only one that can save him). They both die together and resurrect and have that meeting in the real world that was shown as the epilogue of episode 13.
I don't think any contradictions have formed due to this ending since the original epilogue had no time scale attached to it so we have no idea how much time has passed since Yuri and Co. resurrected.
In short: Woohoo this is a great little extra ending!
Second season is possible now?
Also, I rewatched episode 13.
That is one emotional ending.
The way Otonashi gets frantic when Kanade disappears is excellently done.
Great episode of anime.
I think it took place between Kanade's reincarnation and Yuzuru's reincarnation. We haven't seen Yuzuru get reincarnated, have we?

I just rewatched the last episode. The only clue we get to his reincarnation is in the credits when all the members of the SSS aka "The Like Hell We are Dead Brigade" disappear. Though like the post above me says: There is no time line when they meet up reborn.

Another Epilogue
After everyone had left the Afterlife, Otonashi remains and takes up the role of the student council president.
Gradually, more youths who had regrets in their lives enters the Afterlife, bringing it back to how it was when the story began, with the school full of students. Otonashi motivates the students around him to gain a courage to live on. Rumours tell that he is waiting for someone, though in actual fact he had already met his 'someone', who had already left for her next life.
Eventually, Otonashi moves on as well.

Yes that was my interpretation of the epilogue as well. I guess it allows room for talking about the timeline in between?
well, after episode 13 its only natural he took up the position since more students show up but what I'm really interested in is how Otonashi eventually moved on.
what's episode 14 about? i understand 13.5 is an epilogue of sorts, but what is 14 about then? is it a randomly placed episode?

It is the unaired episode from the 7th volume of DVD/BD. Same as [Only registered and activated users can see links. ] I have no idea why they put it as 14 though. Sigh
