Default Would you want more anime to make it out of Japan? - 12-04-2010, 08:46 PM

Specifically, I am not referring to Crunchyroll or sites like that, I'm talking more about the DVD releases, but wanna make comments about sites like that then feel free.

Now the USA has far better anime distribution than Europe, one of the things I noticed was that about 4/5's of my anime DVD collection are in the NTSC format, believe me those DVD's are unavailable in Europe. I have a region 0 DVD player but I know many don't have access to such players. It's good to see sub only releases becoming more prominent but do you think we get enough? I'd love to hear the opinions you guys have.

I think in this subject no one can ever be satisfied with the number of titles or the way things are released. While I am lucky to live in the US and thus can easily access anime on DVD, there's still a lot to be dissatisfied about as a fan. There's a huge list of things I dislike about how the anime industry is run here, but I won't complain about all of it, I'll just cite the biggest complaint I have at the moment, which is the fact that there are no re-releases of many titles. While I, for one, try my hardest to support the anime industry by buying DVDs when I can, a lot of times it simply isn't possible for me to buy the anime I enjoy.

For example, I found myself with some extra money and was looking to buy either a Black Lagoon or NGE box set. Problem with this is that since no anime companies have re-released or even re-printed these two sets (and many others, yes I'm looking at you Kamichu!) the prices for these sets (new and used) are ridiculous. I'm sorry but I can't imagine myself forking over $60 for neither Black Lagoon nor NGE, as much as I adore these series. Maybe the industry wouldn't be so bankrupt or constantly looking to blame fansubbers for lack of sales if they focused on lowering prices and re-releasing older titles so that the people who actually want to buy Anime aren't making his/her/parents' wallets suffer.

Sorry for the long post, but this is my humble opinion on this.

Thanks Weika and Drah for the awesome sigs

7. I'd buy this, it's too awesome not to
6. Too good too just download, but there's no replay value, so I wouldn't buy it
5. Download it
4. Stream it if you have time
3. Try it if you dare...
2. Really, don't watch this unless you want pain
1. Oh Dear God, I can't believe I sat through that

No, we don't get enough sub only DVD anime but they always fall back on adding in a dub track (see Clannad) and up goes the price again.

Not sure if you're still looking but the store I use has BL and Kamicu re-release sets, new, in the $30 to $40 range but it's probably those thin-pack boxes. But for NGE, the price on that set is insane.

It would be obviously good for us to have access to more DVDs, even though I don't get DVDs that often but when I do it's a pain in the arse when I want a particular DVD and it's only available in the US, which isn't that much of a problem but it is an extra hassle. Argh gimme Kara no Kyoukai DVD too -.-'

I've only been checking amazon, but I haven't checked on Kamichu or BL in a few weeks...I hate thinpack sets, but they're cheap and even though I don't like the way FUNi encodes their DVDs, that SAVE thing that they've got going on is quite awesome...

It's too expensive to even consider buying, and I know the prices won't go down unless it's re-released, which it probably won't be, argh!

I'd rather thin pack box sets then stacked box sets.

The thinpacks are nice for shelf space, but sometimes the quality of the DVDs themselves are compromised, like when FUNi decides to put 7 episodes on a single DVD in order to create a thinpack it annoys me. Besides that though, box sets are prettier like the Haruhi Limited Edition one I have

I like beefier boxes myself...thin packs just don't feel right.

Box sets like Lucky Star and the Re-release of Higurashi get it right, thinkpack with 6 DVD's packed inside.
