Default Makoto Shinkai... the next Miyazaki? - 11-12-2010, 07:14 AM

You might not know the name, but you probably know his last two movies-

"The Place Promised in Our Early Days"

and "5cm per Second"

In Japan, Shinkai is already being called "The New Miyazaki" and with his new movie "Children who Chase Lost Voices from Deep Below" scheduled to be released in May 2011 it seems to be a realistic notion.

Miyazaki is the greatest... but he can't go on forever.

Banzai Shinkai!!

BANZAI SHINKAI!

I'm in the support Shinkai boat myself. I absolutely loved the both "The Place" and "5cm per second" - both had tons of heart, and left you to debate life at its core and where we are going as both individuals and the human race. That, and it simply can also boil down to love itself. Powerful tool, that.

I'm excited that his new movie is going to have adventure elements. That trailer has a Miyazaki feel to it.

Indeed. We know he can pull it off with how he did "Place" with the airplane and the tower sequence, and how it felt sweeping and majestic, just picture that larger scale style and it starts to make me think he can indeed rival if not beat Miyazaki at his own game. Might be a bit early to say, but I have faith.

Voices of a Distant Star was also incredible. He's probably the one director where I would go out of my way to watch anything done by him.

Watch list:
Fall 2010: Bakuman, Index 2
Winter 2011: Fractale

I'm with you there... along with Spirited Away, Totoro, Castle in the Sky... and really all of Miyazaki's movies. But Shinkai has the best shot at being the next Miyazaki.

The thing about Miyazaki movies is that it sort of captures something magical that seems to be missing from Shinkai's movies. Whenever I watch a Miyazaki movie it doesn't feel like something's missing, but with 5cm and even a little with Place Promised it felt like something just wasn't there...

Each director has his merits, but I don't think that Shinkai or any director will be the next Miyazaki, while there will be directors who will be able to use the medium in amazing ways, each has his own distinct style and you've got to respect them for that instead of constantly comparing them to someone else.

That is all.

Thanks Weika and Drah for the awesome sigs
