Lol I have only seen Spirited Away (if I remember correct) and I liked it.
I haven't seen a Shinkai movie yet, but I'm downloading right now Voices of a Distant Star, 5 Centimeters Per Second, The Place Promised in Our Early Days (dl it about 9 months ago but never saw it). Hope they are too good.

If Hoshi o Ou Kodomo, his new movie which I haven't seen yet, exceeds the standards set by 5cm per second and his other films then I might consider him the next Miyazaki in producing visual masterpiece though they venture in different context and style since Miyaki is more focus on old but light animation that will relive your childhood days meanwhile Makoto Shinkai ventures on coming of age love stories as far as his films had show.

Miyazaki is a nature lover and pretty much all of his movies contain animals or unearthly creatures. He's really good at explaining us the complex interactions between human and nature.

Shinkai is really good at creating that longing feeling in the heart which is probably why some would feel that something's missing. Remember your first crush? Your first rendezvous? How two people yearn for each others' presence. Its a completely different dimension from Miyazaki's line of thought.

When you finish a Miyazaki movie you take a deep breath and say it was a wonderful experience. When you finish a Shinkai movie, you're too choked to say a word. Nostalgia bangs the door open in our heads.

Kids and adults both can appreciate Miyazaki movies but Shinkai caters to the adults because kids won't understand the consequences of distant relationship not to mention the pensive mood of his movies will bore them or bring them to tears.

Is Shinkai the next Miyazaki? Definitely yes in stature but in his own league.

i prefer Makoto Shinkai's movies to Miyazaki's
imho it just falls down to 5cm/s vs mononoke
and with the similarly good stories, the winner is 5cm/s because of the superior art work
