Default What happened to the long running Anime? - 11-02-2010, 07:37 PM

Excluding Fairy Tail, long running anime (example Naruto, Bleach or One Piece) have not been released the past years.

Also, some of these animes have been stopped like D.Gray-man, Gintama and Reborn! although they were too close to the manga (not sure about this one because I don't read manga). Nevertheless, do you think there is a relation to this?

Nowadays, animes last like 24-26 episodes even for animes like Nurarihyon No Mago and Bakuman that have 100+ manga chapters.

What do you think is causing this?

No money =/
Production companies take a big gamble when they plan series that pass 50 episodes....

Yeah, I understand but I think that normally the gamble pays off because it is this type of anime that make the biggest franchises

yeah reborn is like one of the big ones in jump behing op,naruto and bleach and is sure to get really big in the future if its serialization continues after the big three finnish, so i dont why they stopped making episodes for it and d.gray is good but its no longer in jump got moved to another monthly magazine cause it kept going on hiatus the mangaka kept falling ill or something, i guess we'll truly know once the big three finnish bleach is supposed to finnish in the next five or so years naruto maybe be similar but OP god knows when that will be over since it just reached the half way point in the manga after 600 chapters (dont read op by the way)

There's not enough room in the market, would be my guess as to what the main factor is. You mentioned four shows that already appeal to basically the same demographics, which makes it an even bigger risk to try wedging another one in there and competing with the others for things like merchandise sales.

Usually an anime will get a 12/26 episode season and then after, if popular, get renewed for a second. Even with popular mangas, if the anime isn't done right, people will hate it. And sometimes the production company goes bankrupt, as it did with Gonzo; as a result, AIC picked up the second season of Strike Witches.

I think production companies now are more interested in the short game. They don't really want to take the gamble in a faltering economy with a long anime. Instead, it seems like they're focusing more on animes that lend themselves to merchandising.

And because of that, that's why almost all the animes are full of ecchi stuff.

Well, you know, anything released in the past few years can't be called long-running now, even if they last another 10 years.

-edit- Not even Fairy Tail, which could be canceled tomorrow, for all we know.

I thought Bleach was ending after the Aizen arc....
could I be wrong?

Fortunately, you are mistaken. At least two more Bleach arcs were announced in an interview with the author.

The Aizen arc is already over in the manga, and the next one has begun.
