ps: the 720p and 1080p are the "HIGHT" of the media meaning the second number in the resolution. so if your monitor is 1024x768, or whatever that 4:3 is, you can only play 720p video not 1080p
you should set your media player to NOT stretch things and display the default aspect ratio >.>

and actually my laptop can only go to 1024x768, but i can still play 1080p videos. the thing is, there is no notable difference between 720p and 1080p at all. For me, i try to avoid 1080p if possible for that reason because its usually 3x the size... that goes for most people too unless you are sourcing out the monitor to a large TV screen ( > 50 inches is a rough estimate of where you *might* notice a difference).
