I have actually found a converter (FREE) that can convert mkv/avi and so on to mp4 format. So far the converted videos work on iPod and PSP. I haven’t had the chance to test on other devices. No worries with soft subs as well. This converter will hardcode the subs. Only issue is that, fonts/karaoke fx and other pretty finishes will be lost. It’s good. Give it a try.

It is impossible to transcode without some quality loss(unless you’re using a lossless format but no hardware players support that).
