//I can play an MKV on my computer, my portable, my bluray player, and my standalone. I can play a bluray on my bluray player.//

You can, oh how nice how about the rest of the world? Oh yes **** the rest of the world. They should have been supporting mkv and buying the latest possible media devices that support the tech.

Lets get this straight, .mp4 file can be played on any system that supports .mkv, plus it can be played on many more systems that do not play .mkv. More people can access the content on the device appropriate for them -> Better user experience and wider audience.

I do understand that fansubbers are mainly focusing on their pc audience which makes mkv probably the easiest/best choice for them.
And since they don't get money from what they do they have no need to use format that offers quality to the people outside their limited target audience.

Since you didn't seem to understand it the first time: Hi, container =/= hardware. I don’t know how to make it any simpler for you.

If format/container can only be played in certain hardware does it

//provide higher quality/better user experience than a purchased product.//?

I don't know about you, but the fact that I can play the media with the hardware I want is quite high on my list of "better user experience".

You forgot this important part from the quotation.

//So basicly Mp4 is superior container, >>not because of its features but because of its compatibility wich greatly outweights any improvements mkv has.< Months

//There’ve been handhelds and standalones out for years.//

So how many are we talking about here 3? 10? Popcorn hour?

You do know that there are quite plenty of Psp's, Ipods, Iphones, Ps3, X360, Blu-ray players that have been out for years, and sold milions of units. You saying that the machines that are supporting mkv are even marginaly close to that ammount?

hasn't mkv been improved and edited a lot withing these years? can mp4 which as a industry standard and is already supported in many devices go trough such changes without sacrificing compatibility with older devices? Don't tell me file restrictions are only disadvantages as they do have their own advantages as well.

Welp, this got boring fast.

Cool story, bro.

That's awesome, has nothing to do with the container itself though.

Try reading my other comments again.

Okay, now the repeating yourself is getting repetitive.

Didn't I say there have been Bluray players out for months? There've been handhelds and standalones out for years.

"So basicly Mp4 is superior container[...]"
"No, MKV is a superior container, full stop."
"[...]it could be considered as the best[...]"

Thank you for ending this yourself, as your repetitive arguments that have nothing to do with the containers themselves got boring long ago. One last time, I'll suggest you learn a bit more on the subject, so that the next person you argue with(I'm sure you'll find someone) on this isn't as baffled as me, at why you're making pitiful attempts to argue about things you have little knowledge of.

//Welcome to the real world//

Wasn't ment to be a one liner to look like I "pwned" you. It was ment to wake you up from the imaginary year 2011 your living.

Like I have said from the beginning, Mp4 is still the more supported format and it plays even on older stand alone media devices.
(which many cannot be updated by firmware, or the firmware updates are restricted by hardware)

The problem with people like you who claim that we who prefer Xvid or Mp4 are slowing down technological is that you expect people to actualy replace their brand new Blu-ray players or any other standalone media device just to get Karaoke Subtitles and ordered chapters. Are you insane?

Of course its nice that Mkv supports such a wide array of subtitle, video and music formats, but not many devices (even from the recent ones) have been build around to handle codecs that can play virtually every video, audio or subtitle format on the planet that is stuffed to this container you love so much.

I understand that Mkv has pretty good chance to become like Xvid is right now with the recent Divx7 deal(or what ever it is), but that will still take few years (or more) for that to happen.

Mkv file is like Linux distributions(also opensource no?), from the OS standpoint it could be considered as the best operating system in the world because of hunreds of features that windows users cant even start to imagine, Why? because there's no support from industry for the OS and most normal people are happy enough with their buggy unstable operating system.

Indeed, Sony has locked away functionality of some hardware under Linux. They advertised it as a selling point but denied their customers a great deal of usefulness.

Choosing apples over oranges is a preference. Chossing an inferior technological implementation over a superior one, is holding advancement back.

The corresponding paragraph is some failed attempt at making an analogy. If you don't understand, try to think about it a bit more, and maybe your next argument won't be filled with fallacies.

Okay, I give up. I tried to get you to at least learn A LITTLE about what you were talking about, but you refused. There is no such thing as an "HD media format." The container does not limit the resolution in any way. You can have 1080p AVI files. MKV would be an alternative to MP4 if it didn't have dozens of enhancements and a cleaner codebase in general, as of right now, it is simply a step forward that people like yourself kick and scream about taking, as with any other technological advancement that isn't exactly what you are used to.

*sigh* http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Container_format_%28digital%29
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Codec
Some people still want RMVB "because it's smaller." Ignorance really hinders your ability to argue on a subject.

Including the above explanation of this being a fallacy that isn't worth acknowledging, I'll even give you a hint: Money.

[Insert clever one-liner here that makes it look like I "pwned" you.]

Linux on Ps3 allows quite nice things, but there are problems like unaccessible hardware. You can't really use the hardware efficiently as there are no official drivers for them, this limits the use of ram and gpu and possibly processing power.

And yes Booyadude has some valid points, and I admit that I didnt know about this Divx deal which make the future look a lot brigther. However prefering other types of formats is not holding advancement back, its just preference.

People and the industries will decide when mkv will become the mainstream media format of choice. Forcing it down on peoples throats wont do any good, there are still people buying dvd's while the better and more shinier blu-ray is available and most of the world is still using analog tv broadcasts and the popularity of HD broadcasts is still rather small.

Mp4 is at the moment the HD media format that is more widely supported and because of this it can be still considered as the format of choise. However when Mkv gains the popularity and support it will be recognized as the better co-existing alternative for mp4.

But the ideal form of technological advancement is to support all the possible platforms and formats while slowly killing the support on the formats that people stop to use. There's great demand for xvid, mp4 and mkv which all have their pro's and cons.

IF industry would suddenly stop relasign dvd's because they are "holding the technology back" while there's still great demand for these it would only cause them to loose money and customers. Both required for "technological advance".

props Booyadude. You know what you're talking about. To be fair though, you can play an mkv on the ps3 with linux installed. I'm not too sure how well that works, I've heard it has trouble with 720p, but it's doable even now.

Ordered chapters and support for more subtitle formats are nice small extras but still not enough to justify the lack of official support for the format.

But I sure hope you speak the truth about mkv gaining more hardware support. The more these standalone players etc support files the better.

Although I would be perfectly happy if they would just add better support for external subtitles and soft subs. Would save a lot bandwidth if every1 could just download the raws and add the subtitles they prefer.
