Booyadude Says:

If you’re talking about DB, I believe you mean AVI+H.264. At least these guys aren’t as retarded as DB in that respect.

I’ll give this a chance

^hey booyadude, can you explain? I really don’t know those codecs or w/e they’re called, and why there are so many diff kinds/how that affects quality? So far i’ve just been going with -> bigger file -> more likely to be better quality.

Koga Says:
June 3rd, 2009 at 12:12 am

hmm flipped threw the ep and didn’t really like it. There Dragonball episode wasn’t much to watch either. Ill wait for DB. I’ve never been a fan of MKV anyways. Why poeple like it is as beyond me as to why Bush got a second term.

Donnie Says:
June 3rd, 2009 at 12:19 am

If bush could pack a multiple audio stream, multiple subtitles, chapter selection, support all audio and video codecs I would vote for him

Mischgi Says:
June 3rd, 2009 at 12:21 am

i stayed up for this and will give it a try! when db is released i will re-watch it anyway… as always :)

Koga Says:
June 3rd, 2009 at 12:21 am

lol if it was being used for all that i would understand but its not its being used for single audio, single subtitles so whats the point

Booyadude Says:
June 3rd, 2009 at 12:25 am

Miroku: In short, H.264>XviD/DivX/Other because of compression quiality(e.g. higher quality for the same size, or same quality at a smaller size), MKV>AVI/MP4/OGM/Other because of compatibility, and features(e.g. ordered/linked chapters, and theoretically, limitless A/V and subtitle streams), Bigger file(usually)>Smaller file because of increased bitrate (again, not always true though). For further information, try google.

Koga: The reason Bush got a second term is the exact same reason people still use AVI/MP4 and others. That being: Ignorance, often of the willful variety.

Dakilla Says:

Can’t believe you guys made me register this site to comment ;)

Koga Says:
June 3rd, 2009 at 12:31 am

Ow well to each there own. MKV cant support what I do with video anyways so I cant use it even if i wanted too.

Booyadude Says:
June 3rd, 2009 at 12:38 am

Would you be so kind as to share what it is you don’t know how to implement correctly inside an MKV container?

Toushirou Says:
June 3rd, 2009 at 12:51 am

Stupid punch will wait on db thanks for posting it up

Koga Says:
June 3rd, 2009 at 12:55 am

2 things. One being that I do karaoke and even though some poeple don’t like it a great deal do and usually its not going to show up correctly unless you hard code it to the video. The second thing being that the group I’m in applies a gradient effect to the subs. Now this would show up correctly but no one would be able to view the video because of the lag it would generate. For every one line of text the gradient makes over 50 lines that have to play all at the same time. I’m sure some poeple out there have machines capable of playing them but the majority don’t

So basically you have to hard sub it anyways so there is no reason to use mkv

miroku2192 Says:
June 3rd, 2009 at 1:00 am

Booyadude:
Thanks for the great response! I’ve come to like mkv files as well, but i thought h.264 and mkv were the same thing :X…i often see those together i thought. oh well. Thanks for the info

7even Says:

You ungrateful brats will never be satisfied.. . lil bastards!”sigh”.. since when do I kare! oh well

Booyadude Says:
June 3rd, 2009 at 1:10 am

Uhh, MKV has nothing to do with hardsubs. So yes, you could use still use MKV and use many of the other features like linked chapters, as well as having less overhead.

Mind you, you can have perfectly good looking softsubbed karaokes with MKV as well. The “gradient” or whatever that group the you’re in uses is obviously just more “hay guise our stuf is pwetty so that means we’re better” unnecessary fluff.

So there’s still no reason to use inferior containers.

PhuzyBuny Says:
June 3rd, 2009 at 1:12 am

I stand with Booyadude. *buny paws up*

Dakilla Says:
June 3rd, 2009 at 1:14 am

We actually hardcode our karaoke…
but the subs are all Soft :)

BokuWaOtakuJaNai Says:
June 3rd, 2009 at 1:15 am

That’s way over my head. I agree with whoever is right, and 99% of the time it seems that would be Booyadude.

@Dakilla…I’m not going to say it, but that’s just begging for an erectile dysfunction joke.

Koga Says:
June 3rd, 2009 at 1:21 am

The karaoke is still limited and any major effects would generate lag for a lot poeple. Its just not worth it to me.

As for the gradient yes that’s all it is is fluff. Its not that we are saying we are better but Taka and Eclipse do white subs so there’s no reason for us to do it. We apply the effect because a lot of poeple like it. In fact the majority of a fan base watch our subs because of it so removing it would be retarded.

Im sure you have your reasons for thinking the way you do but we have our reason for using the containers that we do.

Booyadude Says:
June 3rd, 2009 at 1:30 am

Have you seen gg’s Maria+Holic OP karaoke? That pretty much blows away your usual hardsubbed karaoke with a bunch of ugly particle effects. And it’s softsubbed. Derp.

I’m not even going to comment on the average level intelligence your fanbase must have…

Care to explain what those reasons are?

Also, this is a good read. Oh, and this is a good watch.

Slimm Pickenz Says:
June 3rd, 2009 at 1:36 am

well i for one am glad another sub group gave it a shot. im kinda tired of DBs mid quality AVIMKVs. i figure im gonna have to convert it anyways(to watch on my 360) so might as well get better quality

Koga Says:
June 3rd, 2009 at 2:03 am

I’m not saying its not passable to make good effects with MKV I’m just saying there is no reason for me to use mkv over anything else for it. I personally loved the maria+holic opening along with the k-on opening (even though its hard to read)

I’m just saying If I’m not adding multi subs, not adding multi audio, not needing chapter selection then why would i “need” MKV. there just isn’t any reason for it when i could make my life easier and maybe a few others if i use mp4 which at least poeple could play on there xbox and avi so poeple could play it on there dvd player.

MKV dose have its purpose but I’m not going to take the convertible down to Lowes I’m going to take the truck.

btw you get pretty offensive about the MKV thing don’t you 8)

Koga Says:
June 3rd, 2009 at 2:05 am

o and i don’t use particle effect lol i use simple karatemplater. i try and keep everything looking clean and professional. my effects usually aren’t any more “flashy” then DB’s

Chase Says:
June 3rd, 2009 at 2:08 am

I liked Punch’s sub, i hope they continue.

MoJo-X Says:
June 3rd, 2009 at 2:14 am

I guess I’m downloading DB’s release. As for the whole mkv/MP4/avi issure: I personally like mp4’s better since their more compatible by stand alone players than mkv’s are. Yes it is a fact that mkv’s can virtually handle any sub file, audio and video quality.

However, I don’t really care for fancy text are multiple audio tracks. Reason why is because I’d rather just have jap audio and english subs, except for dbz where Id rather have english dub version (kinda grew up on it).

All in all I just think its just by preference. To me both mkv’s and mp4’s handle H.264, AVC, AC3 well, but again I’d go with the mp4’s since their supported on my PS3. Yes, I know that I can convert mkv’s, but I’m too lazy for that and I don’t want to risk lowering the final quality. But, you can just invest in getting a hd cable or VGA/DVI cable running from your video card (assuming it supports that funtion) and have it run to your Tv/LCDHDVTY. Just some thoughts, don’t wanna start a whole argument about who’s wrong/right.

MJM128 Says:
June 3rd, 2009 at 2:28 am

MKV – it’s efficient and open source, what’s not to love?

Booyadude Says:
June 3rd, 2009 at 2:34 am

I was under the assumption that fansub groups all wished to improve their release quality. That would be reason enough for me, at least.

It’s not about need, it’s about the fact that there is room for improvement, just like with any other release, from any other fansub. Again, I don’t think hardware compatibility is grounds for a lower quality release. It’s understandable if you’re offering the low quality releases as an option for people who want it, but releasing only low quality files is just silly.

I don’t see any meaning in that analogy. It’s not as though AVI or MP4 can do something MKV can’t, or have any benefits.

You can call it offensive, or you can think about it like I do after reading your comment. I really need to stop doing this…

zouave Says:
June 3rd, 2009 at 2:36 am

punch’s subs are ok but not efficient or should i say accurate.. without even having to know proper japanese you can tell the difference anyway i checked just the intro and can see huge difference between DB and Punch and the speed they released it was maybe an hr or 2 faster well if ppl prefer quality they should go for DB and also i prefer widescreen vids compared to the normal ones XD

Koga Says:
June 3rd, 2009 at 2:43 am

Your not going to be able to see a quality difference if a good encoder is working on a high quality mp4 file.

Iv already listed several things that hard subbing can do that MKV cant. So I’m not sure why you brought that up again.

You want plain white subs and simple karaoke fine download MKV. Like i said before. to each there own. Everyone else has opinions and wants too.

My opinion is that its stupid to use a format on the basis that you can use features your not going to use.

CrapFace Says:
June 3rd, 2009 at 2:57 am

bleach 222?! naruto shippuuden 111?!
THIS MEANS SOMETHING

Booyadude Says:
June 3rd, 2009 at 3:01 am

Yes, if you are going for Xbox playback, there are many limitations on encoding settings, and quality is noticeably worse than an equivalent size file with improved encoding settings, but no hardware support.

No, you’ve listed absolutely nothing that MKV cannot due. Why you’re comparing a container with the way your subs are implemented in your releases, I don’t know.

You do know that you can attach fonts to an mkv just fine, right? Also, your group does not offer MKV, therefore I do not have the option to watch your subs if I want high quality.

My opinion is that it’s stupid to not offer a high quality file alongside your lower quality ones. And while you’re at it, why not start using those features?

MoJo-X Says:
June 3rd, 2009 at 3:04 am

Yes, I understand that there is room for improvment, but Booya your making it sound that mp4’s can never obtain the same level of quality. If you considering using THEORA then. well ya that’s true since mp4’s can’t even use that. Im talking on the lines of using the same encode (such as H.264 and AVC), both are great containers and can produce the same results. The only time Fansub groups are going to use THEORA is usually when their making a Blu-Ray rip, but personally I just rather buy the official Blu-ray because its quality is gonna be whay higher then a rip. Also, don’t forget that some stand alone players have an up scaling effect like my PS3 (yes I’m using it as an example again).

And ya, after a certain level your not gonna see a difference in quality. To me, this is why I think that 720p is the highest that most fansub groups offer. I personally think that Blu-ray rips are pointless since they take up like 8gigs when I could just have a small anime series. Another reason why I’d rather just buy a blu-ray rip. Alright w/e I have spoken and I’m gonna drop it at that. Both mp4’s and mkv’s are good containers. =]

Booyadude Says:
June 3rd, 2009 at 3:13 am

Umm, you wouldn’t happen to be thinking of the group THORA would you? Seeing as Theora does not offer anywhere near the quality x264 can achieve at the same bitrate…

In any case, yes, they can both contain streams encoded with better settings, however the Xbox cannot playback the mp4 if it has many of those settings increased, or on at all.

Also, fansubs, so long as the industry hasn’t phased them out, or collapsed by then, will likely be offering even higher resolution files when broadcast quality improves. O-L releases 1080p Shangri-La for example, though there isn’t much gain due to, again, low broadcast quality.

Koba: “Not really Punch looks like they just unscaled 480 because there video is vary blocky.”

Now your really talking nonsense
Punch’s video is based on a 720p RAW…which means that’s actually not an upscale.

@kingwalker:
It’s normal for you to say that the quality looks the same.
If your saying that, I’m almost sure that you don’t see your episodes on a LCD, because if would see it, you’d notice a difference in the video quality

Booyadude Says:

Dakilla, Bleach is not an HD show, the TV station that airs it upscales it. So yes, it’s an upscale, though I still can’t imagine it looking worse than DB.

Dakilla Says:
June 3rd, 2009 at 5:53 am

Booyadude you’re so wrong…
not going to argue with you because I’m sure of it!

Koga Says:
June 3rd, 2009 at 5:54 am

if they used a 720 raw then i apologize for saying they upscale (even though a 720 raw is still unscaled 480 as booyadude said). it was only an assumption. i should of just said there encoder sucks or there raw sucks because there video sucks. I can full screen DB’s 480 on my wide screen monitor and it looks 10 times better then PUNCH.

Koga Says:

your all on crack. lol booyadudes whole argument of why mkv is better is because of quality. well since punch hardcodes there karaoke the quality loss is there whether or not its mkv or not. plus watching there video is like watching a tetris game its so blocky. They rushed this release way too much.
