Wow. Nothing like love hina. At all.
The only similarity is that there are relationships.
This anime focuses on the drama and complications of (lesbian and other) relationships. Also it deals with the complications of being a teenager and maturing. It’s an accurate depiction of how it feels to be a teenager facing the anxiety of handling your sexuality.
The only other series I’ve found to do this was the manga Hourou Musuko, which is written by the author of Aoi Hana. Personally, I quite prefer Hourou Musuko, but the main subject matter (transexuals, gender identity) was obviously too touchy to be turned in to an anime.

Oh, and I suppose Fumi and Aa-chan are seperated childhood friends, but there’s no real romance between them. Fumi’s in a relationship with someone else and Aa-chan is just a supportive friend.
