Phuzumarry: This is a 30 minute movie which first aired July 28, 2009 in Canada at the Fantasia International Film Festival. The official site can be found here. So some guy was raising a beast of a thing called a Cenco. This monster turns up in the city and obviously the police and military want it somewhere else, somewhere between a rocket and a hard place. Then some other guy shows up with another Cenco and some crazy arse fighting breaks out. 30 mins to build up some real action, this looks like a real adrenaline pumper although I wouldn’t really want to call it a movie. I first came across this while uploading the supercell single, Kimi no Shiranai Monogatari. Supercell actually contributed a song to this movie. There weika, happy?!

Summary: A huge monster shows up on the top of a building of an ordinary city, prompting the Defense Forces to go into action and causing the citizens of the city to start an uproar. Yuki, a brave-hearted and naturally inquisitive girl, happens to know a secret. Her friend Tetsu has been keeping and raising a strange creature called Cenco. Instantly becoming fascinated by Tetsu and his pet, a mysterious boy appears with control over the huge monster threatening the town. With that, an unexpected battle begins.

Plot: First Squad is set during the opening days of World War II on the Eastern Front. Its main cast are a group of Soviet teenagers with extraordinary abilities; the teenagers have been drafted to form a special unit to fight the invading German army. They are opposed by a Schutzstaffel (SS) officer who is attempting to raise from the dead a supernatural army of crusaders from the 12th-century Order of the Sacred Cross and enlist them in the Nazi cause.

Not much is known about this film except a few details. The movie will be fully written by the author and creator of One Piece, Eiichiro Oda. It also seems that the Strawhat Pirates may be in the Marines due to wearing Governemnt Agent clothes, Nami appears to leave the crew for an unknown reason, the Main Villian’s name is “Gold Lion” and Sengoku, Garp, Shanks, and Whitebeard seem to know him well, and for the first time Brook will appear in a movie. An anime based entirely on flashbacks? Just how good could it possibly be? Well, I am here to tell you … that it can be a great way to do things if the story and the characters are strong enough to pull it off. With Grave of the Fireflies, we are able to see both aspects, as we follow the life of main character Seita through a series of flashbacks. The film actually starts with his death, so you aren’t really sure what to expect, but by the end of the film you truly see how tragic his death was. The movie takes place in Japan near the end of WWII, and centers around Seita and his sister Setsuko. Orphaned in a flashback, we watch as the siblings must traverse through a war-torn country, doing anything they can to possibly survive. But, we know in the end that at least one of them won’t. This is a beautifully crafter, character driven story, that is tough to watch, yet leaves a big impact when you have reached its conclusion. It’s no surprise that it garnered many awards.

Buny Summary

Makoto Konna is a regular high school student who accidentally obtains an ability to “leap” through time. She first discovers her ability when she miraculously survives a train accident. Using her new found ability she begins to play with the limitless possibilities of time travel. Arriving to class on time, doing well on tests, are now all simple tasks for one who has the ability to travel back in time.

She is then confronted with a love confession from one of her close friends Chiaki Mamiya which she childishly avoids using her time leaping abilities. However her time leaps are restricted to a limited number of times and she eventually uses them all when avoiding Chiaki’s confessions becoming unable to rescue her other good friend Kosuke Tsuda and his girlfriend from an accident which kills them both.

Chiaki reveals the truth and the story unravels into a desperate race for Makoto to unveil her true feelings before it’s too late. Using his last time-charge, Chiaki reverses the incidents preceding Kosuke’s accident and this restores one of Makoto’s time charges. Using her last time charge, Makoto is finally able to talk to Chiaki about her feelings for him and likewise for Chiaki to Makoto.

I couldn’t give this movie any more praise than I already have; definitely one of my favourites without a doubt. The animation quality is spectacular from Madhouse; the fluid movements, the lively, bright and intricate backgrounds are stunning on their own, a masterpiece that the artists should be proud of. Character development is spectacular as the writers create a stunningly real teenage environment; school, bullying, and most importantly, the awkward first relationships. Oku Hanako’s contribution to this movie is wonderfully addicting. A bit of science fiction, a bit of romance, a bit of comedy, and a lot of phuzy-awesomeness! Watch, enjoy, fall in love.

Phuzy Review

One of my favourites is “Toki wo kakeru shoujo” or “The girl who leapt through time” from Madhouse released in Japan on July 15, 2006. A definite must see for those who haven’t already. The animation quality is outstanding. The story is riddled with hilarious comedy scenes and has a strong plot driving behind the whole movie. Character development is spectacular as Makoto Konno discovers her true feelings while reliving moments with her accidental ability to go through time. She literally leaps into her time travels. My phuzy-ratings for this awesome-tastic movie are:

Animation: 9/10
Character: 9/10
Overall: 9/10

Definitely a good movie to watch during the summer by yourself, with your girlfriend, boyfriend, or just plain old friends. This little love story features a strangely addicting song “Garnet” by Oku Hanako from her album TIME NOTE. Whether for the high quality animation, the amazing character personalities and development, or the realistically funny scenes, this is a movie you really should get a large bowl of popcorn and a comfortable couch to enjoy. Set 300 years in the future Japan, the world is left in shambles after genetic modification of plants to test their ability to grow in harsh environments goes wrong and the plants develop a consciousness. The modernized world is reduced to primitive shambles as a new lifestyle grows and the forest dominates through their control of the water sources.

Agito lives happily in Neutral city and accidentally stumbles upon a Stay Field which houses cryogenically stored humans. The remaining active pod contains Tula who wakens to a strange world. Unwilling to accept this strange world Tula turns to another past human, Shunack who plans to rid the world of the forest using technology, his intensified human abilities and Tula’s father’s invention to help achieve his goals.

Hoping to live in harmony with the forest, Agito becomes an intensified human as well. Intensified humans borrow their superhuman powers from the forest and if used improperly will result in the permanent transformation of the user into a tree. Using his new found power, Agito sets out to rescue Tula from the force that plans to destroy all hope of unity with the forest.

Like in the phuzy-ratings, the animation quality from GONZO is expected. The high quality standards are what I have learned to love about GONZO. Kokia lends her voice to this wonderful production allowing for a seamless integration of music and animation. My personal favourite part of this movie are the forest dragons! RAWR! Enjoy!

My most recently watched anime movie is “Giniro no Kami no Agito”, or “Spirits of the past” from GONZO. The captivating animation along with the song “Chouwa oto ~with reflection~” by KOKIA at the beginning of the movie only serves to propel the movie to a higher level of intrigue. The background scenery is expected from GONZO; well drawn and detailed beyond belief. I don’t want to spoil any part of the movie so I’ll just leave the following phuzy-ratings:

Story: 8/10
Animation: 9/10
Character: 7/10
Overall: 8.5/10

A good movie to relax with on a lazy summer day! Their original soundtrack is a must! Torrents should be available around. Nipponsei does a great job of torrenting OSTs like this.
